Parsons the New School ofDesign NYC

OMGOSH I’m so desperate to get my grubby hands on any information available on Parsons the New School of Design in New York … where I live, there is barely anyone who is planning to major in art let alone go to a art college … so I have resorted to burying myself in online resources =_=

Anyways, I’m going to be starting my senior year in high school pretty soon so I am still trying to build up my portfolio … this is what I have so far:

Won a special recognition from congress award … thing O_o

Drawing of a little girl and balloons “Balloons of Memories” - watercolor

Won 4 prizes at county fair: special award, best of class award, first place in category award, and judge’s favorite award … ooh and $100 C:

YUP … yes I know so pathetic … only technically 4 pieces finished and I was aiming for like 12 … but the thing is, I don’t really know what pieces are good enough for a portfolio and what pieces are still not quite there yet … and so I would so so appreciate it if anyone could possibly take a little time to look at some of my stuff on my deviant art account here: [mkedude117 on deviantART](http://mkedude117.■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/) and perhaps suggest which other ones may also be used for my portfolio …

Another question I have is about the tuition fees for Parsons … like I’ve heard all kinds of ridiculous fees from some people but I’m not really sure what is the real thing (or maybe I’m just in denial looking at those hiiiiiiiigh tuition fees) … it’s quite hard to move from California all the way across the states to New York just for college, but I gotta do what I gotta do and sacrifices must be made … =_=

Are there any other PUBLIC colleges that are also pretty good for art majors? What are the annual tuition fees compared to Parsons? After all Parsons is still my top choice …

ANY help would be much appreciated C: and it would be absolutely wonderful to be able to see any of your art portfolios online whether accepted or not into your choice of colleges … oh and critiques of my drawings would be nice but I’m probably already asking too much of everyone to be spending so much of their precious time reading this uber long post … =]

Some of the best ways to build up your portfolio is to take as many art classes as possible in school. A pre-college program can do wonders too, check out any some of the fall pre-college weekend classes from your local colleges/art schools. National portfolio day is also amazing for evaluations [National Portfolio Day - Home](http://portfolioday.net/)

Along with your 12 pieces, make sure you complete the Parsons Challenge as well. [Parsons - Apply - Undergraduate](http://parsons.edu/apply/undergrad.aspx)

According to collegeboard ( [College Search - Parsons The New School for Design - Parsons - Cost & Financial Aid](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board) ) Parson’s cost of attendance is around 51K a year (tuition is 34,460). Living in NYC is quite expensive :(

For some images of accepted portfolios I would check out art forums and facebook groups for incoming classes.

One question though: Why Parsons?

OMGOD 51k?! dies

Hmmm … Parsons is supposed to be like a top design school right? But I’m not really sure what other colleges are good and yet much cheaper …

51K. Dang. That’s a lot of dough. On second thought, have you tried Pratt Institute?

I only ask because your work seems very illustrative. And while Parsons has some of the strongest design majors in the nation (especially fashion design), its illustration major doesn’t seem as strong as some of the other art schools (e.g. SVA, RISD, MICA, Ringling, etc).

Overall I’d look into other schools as well, starting here: [AICAD - A Directory of Leading Art & Design Schools](http://www.aicad.org/)
The problem is that the best private art schools are the most expensive, but if you’re in serious need/lucky/work hard enough you can get some hefty scholarships.

If you’re more interested in public universities, you should check out some of the other topics in this forum. There are lots of good suggestions there too.

Thanks for all the suggestions … lol some of my friends at school also said I should go try for illustration … but what can you do after you’re out of college for illustration major? Not much … thought but design majors are supposed to be more … uhm job-friendly lol

Yeah I was looking at Pratt and FIT but gosh they seem to be pretty hard to get into too O_O

Designers do seem more job friendly but that’s mainly because the term is alot broader than Illustration. That is, you couldn’t major in design since design encompasses a large amount of art majors (e.g. fashion design, graphic design, furniture design, industrial design, interior design, game design, etc).

Illustration is one of many majors that takes principles from art and design. It’s actually a pretty broad major, so people from illustration do all sorts of things (some jobs that design majors go after as well). Just take a quick peak at this list of popular Illustrator jobs (taken from a college site)

 1. Editorial Illustration [Magazines, Newspapers, etc.]
 2. Books [Covers, Children’s]
 3. Animation [Character Development, Environments, Conceptual]
 4. Narrative [Cartooning, Comic Books, Graphic Novels]
 5. Fashion
 6. Storyboards [Film, Animation, Television]
 7. Scientific / Medical [to include Botanical]
 8. Advertising Design
 9. Music/Entertainment
 10. Greeting Cards

jesus christ 51k??!! i am currently on swaying on whether i should consider parsons or not, but wow -

Definitely include at least one of your still life studies.

I have heard that the more pieces you have from direct observation in your portfolio the better.

Hi
I came across your post and was wondering if i could know what school you ended up going to. I just want to know because I’m a soon-to-be senior too and I’m also torn as to which school I want to apply to. Really any information would help about the school you chose.
Thanks.
