I don’t know how many people are aware of this, but in PA we pay federal, state, local income tax to the municipality we live in, plus Local Services Tax to the municipality we work in.
In most areas the LST adds up to $52 a year. Workers earning under $12,000 a year are exempt from this tax (this might vary by municipality).
I file a LST refund form for my kids who have part time jobs every year. $52 might not seem like much money, but why pay it if you don’t have to?
My D works in our town in the summer and at her university during semesters. She paid LST to both.
We could file a form to exempt her, but she might earn more money next year so I will just wait and file the refund form if her income ends up being less than $12,000.
