My daughter hosted a NYE party with her friends and had what I think was a unique idea. Most of the guests went to college with D and SIL, so most (I think 10 of the 12 attendees) are engineers, but no one knew what the others did, so they did presentations on “My job and what I do.” Because they are engineers, many actually did power points with charts and graphs! The two who aren’t engineers, SIL and one spouse, work with engineers (SIL is the finance manager for storage facilities for AI computer storage and the other works in cyber security).
As nerdy as it sounds, they had a really good time. Several of the guests work in aerospace so explained what they were working on (if they could; some ran into confidentiality restrictions), others in environmental. My daughter’s job is in civil/traffic, and everyone wanted to know about the new ‘continuous lane’ designs, traffic signals, and something called the ‘diamond’ that I do not understand at all.
What ideas have you, or your kids, had for parties?
A friend just posted a picture of her kid going to a “dress like a fancy chess piece” party. That has to be the most unique theme I’ve ever heard of, and I don’t know where I’d even begin.
It’s almost like they did one of those pick a random word based on your birthday to come up with the theme. (Dress like an elegant traffic signal/ down on your luck chain restaurant/ sexy kitchen appliance). Maybe it was for a board game club party (since I know this student is into that kind of stuff).
We hosted but did not plan a “Nowhere To Wear It” party last summer. Mostly our family and my DIL’s family. You wear something in your closet that you never get to wear but would like to! A fancy dress. An old prom dress/suit. The holiday outfit you want to wear more than once a year. Your favorite ratty sweats or pj’s. Your mini dress that you still love but your legs aren’t build for “mini” anymore - whatever you want!
The outfits were pretty wild. DIL’s family LOVES a good party dress up theme.
I’ve been listening to Amy Poehler’s podcast “Good Hang” and she and Rashida Jones were talking about the pajama dance parties they used to have. Very firm on the pajamas and the dancing.
