I’m noticing that there are a fair few current Olin students here, so I figure this might be a good venue to ask about these…
I spoke with the electrical engineering/music professor via e-mail as to how Olin students might take music lessons and she mentioned applying for/recieving a Passionate Pursuit grant to cover costs. I’ve been too shy to ask her just how much these grants usually cover. Do they award the grants based on the cost of the lessons/pursuit, or is it a general amount given to any student with a valid reason that leaves you to cover the rest of whatever expense it is for?

Hey there,

So I actually did take vocal lessons this semester as a passionate pursuit. I’m planning on doing it again next year. The way it works, I believe, is that they will give you up to a certain amount (I believe $300) for your lessons/whatever. If the cost of the lessons/whatever is less than that, they will only cover the cost. You have to get this all approved, but I think they’re generally pretty good about it.

If any older kids have any corrections to this, feel free to chip in!

It’s a little bit off topic, but for anyone interested, feel free to talk to me about the instrumental music opportunities available at Olin and surrounding. Plenty of people have taken music lessons, we have a conductorless orchestra (like a big chamber group), there’s a local orchestra that is very good, as well as opportunities at Babson and Wellesley. And don’t be afraid to talk to Diana (the professor you mentioned); she loves anything music related, even though she can seem a bit “eccentric”. :)
