Passport Renewal Online

I’m due to have my passport renewed in the next few months. I’ve only ever had it renewed via mail so getting in renewed online will be a new experience. Anyone with experience? Any tips? Seems like it should be more straight-forward than renewing via mail and you don’t have to mail in your current passport.

Yes, I did it about 6 months ago and it was very straightforward. Take care you’re on a .gov site though, DH got conned by some agency ‘helping’ - he got the PP but paid about double.

Yes, there are many scammy sites. I will be careful not to go to one of hose. Thx! Is renewal for 10 years from date of new passport so you lose a few months if you renew before expiration?

I most countries you cannot travel using a passport that will expire within 6 months so it may be best not to wait until closer to expiration.

I did mine and my husband’s online in March. We had the pictures done at Staples, but you can take them yourself.
Staples provided a thumb drive, so the pics were easily uploaded. The process was completed in two weeks.
(Make sure you meet the eligibility requirements to complete online).

We just did ours. Very straightforward process, and I received mine in 8 days. H’s came about a week later. We had our photos done at CVS.

I normally go through the post office so good to know for next week time.

When we got our passports in 2016 AAA took free photos for members at that time. Not sure if that’s still offered.

H and I both renewed our passports online a couple of years ago and it was very easy. I believe we got our photos done at the CVS near our home.

DH and I both recently renewed our passports online and the process was very straightforward. We took the pictures at home ourselves and uploaded them to the site. Both of our passports were within a month of expiring. Once you apply for a renewal, your current passport becomes invalid, so there will be a short period where you won’t have a valid passport. I think we both got ours within 2-3 weeks.

AAA still does free passport photos for members.

I’m not sure our office offers them and tried unsuccessfully for over 45 minutes to speak to a live person at my AAA office. Very unhappy they are so customer unfriendly!

Our neighbor took their passport photos for their online application and got the passport rather promptly after they applied to renew.

They also confirmed that renewals are 10 years from when you apply for renewal and then the passports are not expiring on birthdate like it used to.
