Passport renewal timeframe?

Anyone out there know how long it is taking these days to get an expired passport renewed? One of my kids has a last minute invitation to visit a friend out of the country this summer. Thanks in advance!

Last year was 2 weeks through express. This year maybe faster because less people are traveling. There is also a same day service, but you would have to stand in line at one of passport agencies, depends on where you live you may not have one close by. You could also spend a lot of money to get one of private companies to do it for you.

Sent my daughter’s renewal in sometime mid-May and have not received it back yet. I am getting impatient but will wait until the end of this month to see if there was some problem.

Expired passport through normal processing took a little over a month for D. She sent this in mid March. Her brother’s that we did a few weeks earlier BEFORE expiration was just under two weeks.

Less than 48 hours before an overseas trip, I discovered that my passport had expired. You can get it renewed in 24 hours, but you have to make two trips to your regional passport agency (one to apply for the renewal and one a day later to pick up the passport) and you pay an additional fee. Call your regional passport agency to set up an appointment.

It surprisingly only took a week to get my son’s new passport in February. When we got the envelope so quickly, I thought it was going to be a letter saying we were missing something but no - a new passport. In one week. February must not be a very busy month for them. I think renewals are quicker than new requests, too.

Thanks everyone! That is really helpful.

H and I renewed our expired passports in late March for an early May trip. We had them back weeks before they were needed, so going standard process (by mail, just with new pics and the standard renewal fee) I would say it took under a month. I would imagine the time it takes is heavily seasonally dependent.

P.S. I tracked that the renewal apps had been received by checking my online banking account for when the renewal fee checks were cashed. Sure enough, they were cashed almost immediately! I guess* that* part of the procedure gets top priority! ;)

might take longer to renew an expired passport than a non expired passport.

Even if your passport is not expired, some countries require a passport that is not within X months of expiry. Israel, for example I believe requires a passport to have SIX MONTHS left on it!

p.s. heard my neighbor got sent home from Canada after arriving without his passport on a biz trip!! Don’t have the details, like how he was allowed on the plane without a passport.

I didn’t realize my passport had expired and just happened to get it out of my files 10 days before my trip to Denmark. If you are traveling within two weeks, you need to make an appointment at a local passport agency to renew your passport. At that appointment, you bring your forms and photos and wait–clerk approves it and then you come back the next day to pick up your passport. The website below explains the process. It also has information about current waiting times for processing applications.

We did ours in May, the kids at the post office and mine by mail. They took two or three weeks. I was told that it might take longer because June 1st is the date for needing passports to Canada, but they seem to be moving pretty quickly - however they don’t promise to get them done that fast.

Look at the website for ordering on-line. It gives time estimates.

When I applied, the site said 3-4 weeks for regular service. So, I paid the expedite fee. Mailed it at 9:52 pm via Express Mail at the local post office (living in NYC is good for some things) on Tuesday. Checked on-line and saw it was delivered to the Philly passport ofice before 11 am on Wednesday. Came home Friday night and it was in my mail box.

Had been expired for four years–however same name, same address and while 15years older I look like the same person in the photo.

I think it also helped that I filled out the form on-line–which also tells you the exact amount you owe–and I suspect is easy to scan. If your app is handwrittn it might take longer.

This experience is less than 30 days ago.

Last year, my son applied for and received his first passport in 6 days (non-expedited). We couldn’t believe it, especially since it was in the summer!

Son just renewed his, less than 3 weeks for regular service. That surprised us all.

S took his expired passport to the regional passport office in late May, paid the expedite fee (just to be on the safe side), and received his new passport in less than one week.

Passport fees are jumping significantly on the 13th of this month, so if yours expires soon, I’d jump on it.

I’m guessing the OP is in Massachusetts - we submitted a passport renewal for my d on 6/28 (expedited with overnight mail in both directions) and her status shows we should have it on Friday, 7/9 - and of course this processing included the long weekend holiday for the 4th.
