At first I laughed, rockymtnhigh, then I thought, hmmmm, might be on to something there. It does seem that way sometimes . . .

I’m a 2, sad to say.

lol, rmh!!

Mentally ill. Dangerous at a certain level…probably just business-wise and socially.

If you’d like some insights into a high functioning version, read the Steve Jobs bio and note all of the references to what people called his “reality distortion field”. I have no professional training, but this stuff is some kind of combination of OCD and paranoia. I’ve seen some of it directly. It is so far removed from reality that it initially does make you question whether the issue is in you.

I have a family member who is a pathological liar. I think she inherited/learned it from her mom. She is likely also a narcissist. She scares me. Add in that she is a hypochondriac and OCD and it gets even more interesting. She can’t figure out why she gets very little attention and sympathy for her ailments. We have no way of knowing what’s real and what’s not. One day, something will really be wrong and we’ll all ignore it.

In some cases, you do need to be especially wary of these individuals. It seems that the lies are what keep them “intact” internally and if the right amount of sociopathy is stirred in with the narcissism, they can be dangerous. Know of someone who had this problem manifested in the workplace. They would attend a work mtg. one day and then in the next mtg. the following day would verbatim state “their” ideas (actually those of others who could be in the room at the time they “owns” them). It is also clear that how they defined their relationship with co-workers did not match how the peers would define the connection. They went on to face long imprisonment involving violence (not work related).

This is clearly an extreme circumstance and not the most likely scenario, but if I were an employer in this situation, I would be concerned none the less. As a co-worker, I’d keep the widest distance possible and report all odd experiences so that somewhere, there is a responsible person who has the complete picture.

cartera Are you related to me??? You just described my sister-in-law. Her antics have torn apart my family. It took a long time (too long) for my brother to see her for what she is. Now he feels trapped because of the kids (one of whom, I’m sad to say, seems to be following in mom’s footsteps.)

Proud Mary, does your relative have several guns? Mine does.

Being a number two is why i jusy keep to myself with a few close friends, gets too complicated for me. Guns YIKES!

cartera No guns I know of. (Knowing her, I doubt it.) I’m sorry to here yours’ has guns. That would scare me to death.

Some of these people could be suffering from Fetal Alcohol Effects.

One of my middle school students is a pathological liar - about anything and everything. She wasn’t where she was supposed to be one day (my office) and when confronted with video tape evidence - she denied it! I mean she was right there, full face on the tape, 15 minutes after the fact, same clothes, hair, etc and simply said, “it’s not me”. Took my breath away!
