Path's to becoming a Investment Banker

Hi… I just finished my first year at Indiana University - Bloomington @ the Kelley School of Business… my CUM GPA is a 3.87… and i will be a sophomore finance & accounting major this coming fall… what do i need to do inorder to secure a IB internship…

any advice/experience/suggestions would be appreciated.

It will be pretty hard since you don’t go to a target school. I’d suggest you try to work at a MM firm in Chicago (where people will be more familiar with your school) next summer and hopefully network with people who could recommend you for a BB SA internship junior year.

weasel8488… that is one of my biggest delimmas i am from bergen county, new jersey… and I am unsure if I should stay at IU and hopefully get into Investment Banking Workshop at IU or if i should try to transfer to schools such as NYU stern, Boston College, Umich, CMU… but from the Jr’s/sr’s i have met who are in the IBW at IU… they all have said that the workshop deff teaches you and gives them a hands on experience that prepares them well for wallstreet… I dont know what i should do…

Did you go to BCA by chance? Several of my classmates went to AAST.

The workshops might give you the skills you need to do the job, but you need to get the job first. Unless you are really attached to IU, I would recommend transfering to a school which does better getting students IB jobs.

i hear IU places well in the midwest. the business school is legit, and I hear the investment banking workshop places pretty well too. Your GPA is great, just do a LOT of networking (reach out to alumni) and try to get a solid finance intership for next summer (doesnt have to be IB… private wealth at a big firm or equity research are good Sophomore summer jobs) and you may have a chance.

Trying to transfer to a target is not out of the question either 3.9 from Indiana business school will get you places

no… i actually went to a public school… i live near the oldtappan/tenafly area (wealthy suburbs)… but the thing is weasel… if i trasnfer to another school starting from my Jr year… do you know if other schools such as CMU,Stern, have investment banking program/clubs/wkshops/etc…, that will prepare their students for a career in wallstreet or is it all self taught… also… i know places at NYU stern alot of students want IB jobs… where as at IU… most of the students are not motivated enough and only a few want IB jobs… if i stay at IU i will be deff in the top 10 % of my class… if i go to somewhere like stern i will prob be late/trailing other sternies and I MIGHT have like a 3.4-3.5 GPA at Stern where as at IU ill have a 3.8+… do you think its worth the risk to go to a better school

yeah… im actually a marketing intern here in NJ… and i was a memeber of 3 clubs… along with being a k-201 peer tutor… and i know i need leadership positions…

Well if you don’t think you can pull a 3.5 from Stern then you might be better off with a high GPA coming out of IU. I’m really not sure.

no i think i can pull a high GPA… im just saying “what if”… and also ill be sorta behind compared to other sternies… and i know that interviews for summer intern IB start at the fall/winter of one’s JR year… so it would hurt me… weasel are u a college student or a IBanker?

I’m a rising sophomore at Princeton.

Do you also want to become an investment banker?..

If you do want to become an investment banker… how are you preparing yourself ?

I’m not really sure yet, but I’m definitely keeping the option open. I’m majoring in the sciences and getting a finance certificate (sort of like a minor). I do a few extracurriculars that allow me to showcase personal qualities (leadership, etc.) and try to maintain a relatively high GPA (3.70+). I got a research internship this summer. Next summer I’ll try to get an internship at a boutique IB in New York. Hopefully I’ll get good recs that I can leverage to get an internship at a BB junior summer.

The first step on the path to investment banking is knowing how to use an apostrophe. This will put you in the top 50% of the English speaking population, and the top 25% of the CC population.

oh ho… i think we got a standup comedian over here… or just a wiseass…,‘’'

I think it’s pretty hard to predict what your GPA at your own school is going to be (even after one year); let alone what it might be at another school you’ve never been to.

get into the ibanking workshop at kelley
they had 100% placement rate last year or something too

kmzizzle… that is my main goal right now to get into the IBW at IU… I will only stay at IU if i get into the IBW… but first i need to make sure I want to do investment banking and … the f228 investment banking class is full right now for the fall semester and i am in 4th position on the waiting list i would be extremely upset if I am not able to get into the class… because there is only 1 f228 class in the fall semester and if I do take it in the spring semester it might be too late because if I want to transfer I have to start writing college essays and do applications by late Dec/ Early Jan…

If I do not get into the f228 class… I have been thinking about just going to the class every day, buying all the textbookmaterials, studying for exams, just like I would if i was a student in the class… do you think that is too over the top?

Gellino… that is a good point… I was just being half cocky/half serious.
