It’s a rough year, so even people who have completed the FAFSA in the past are confused. Once you submit the FAFSA, it is then in review or “received” until it completes processing. In the past, that took a couple days. This year, with the changes that took place due to FAFSA Simplification, the processing part is taking longer. It will be completed “by the end of January.” My hope is that it will actually be completed earlier so that students and parents can fix any issues and add schools before the first batch of FaFSAs are sent to schools at the end of January. Just keep watching to see if you can log into your FAFSA to add schools. It may not happen right away.
we were able to sign and submit, but SAI can’t be calculated since my D’s fafsa ID has not been verified. I feel sorry for the financial aid officers at schools who are going to have to try to untangle this mess.
Same status for us. I don’t think we will qualify (only child, large 529) but they still want it submitted
My son is trying to establish an FSA ID and it gets stuck on Step 6. Verify and Confirm … Continue button does not work. He has tried MANY times and called FSA office with no help. Any ideas???
Did you try without a mailing address? Seems that is sticky and stops a lot of applications from continuing
@OregonMom2024 yes he did try that and it got him to step 6 but now won’t go any further
If the helpline was not helpful, you might try submitting a complaint about the issue: Federal Student Aid. There is an option to continue without logging in. You will definitely want to share your information with FSA (don’t submit anonymously) though, so that your issue can be addressed.
In our case, i signed it first followed by D24 and the status shows “in review” for last week or so.
I did pretty much the same… same scenario. Its been a week since. No sign of life same status
To me, this “New FAFSA” seems like a big mess, so far…
First time filling out FAFSA. We got really lucky I guess. Both student and parent forms took less than 15 minutes and student got the SAI number in an email within minutes.
I loved that the it accessed our tax returns in real time and the questions were based on our returns.
When it finally works the way it is supposed to without all these bugs it will be very easy. It is really disappointing that the rollout has been so frustrating for many.
Thank you again @kelsmom.
Appreciated this - skipped the address part - just put in the phone number and it let us create the account. Then when logging in it recognized no address and accepted one at that point.
The same thing happened to me and there is a way to get around it. When filling the contact information out, skip over your address completely. Fill out everything else and then click continue. If it asks you if you want to continue without address click yes. After you’re done with the process and your account is open, go to setting and add your address.
This suggestion has been made multiple times and I’m glad it works.
BUT I will say…if a first time user who is not familiar with this can’t enter their address when it says to first do so, they might just hang it up.
The whole point of this new FAFSA was simplification…and not allowing people to fill in something as simple as their address without a work around is, in my opinion, ridiculous.
I hope this gets corrected very soon.
This is a huge thread and I don’t think I can plow my way through it.
So…my student is a returning student which means we already have both a student ID and a parent ID. Parents tax status is married, filing jointly.
Any things we need to know to do or not do?
Thanks.
Yes. Have the student complete their FAFSA and provide their signature. While completing their form, the student will invite the parent to be a contributor. You will respond to that email invitation, and your section should be pretty easy compared to past years. To avoid any possible system issues, wait until the student is done. After completing it and providing your signature, it will be considered submitted. The student should get an email indicating that the FAFSA was submitted, with an estimated SAI.
Unlike past years, you won’t get an email recapping the information on the FAFSA (used to be called Student Aid Report) soon afterwards; processing is being held up until late January. The FAFSA will not be available for updates or for adding additional schools for at least a couple weeks.
Thank you so much!
Thank u, I was able to do it after reading FB. Parents please follow above method.
How to correct it? My daughter got an email cannot do SAI because of her signature missing
but she signed & submitted
