Patience, all - update on 2024-25 FAFSA

I think we all deserve a free lunch box after completing!

Exactly. This was supposed to be a simplification process
and what you are all describing is anything but that.

Have we talked about the fact that the income protection allowance in the formula hasn’t been updated for inflation as it was supposed to be?!

I missed when the Washington Post covered this in Dec. Here’s something from today:

huh. I wonder if this has anything to do with why the estimator said my kid would get a pell, but when he submitted the form it told him he doesn’t appear to qualify for one (still calculating SAI). Or it could be because they say they’re still verifying his SSN. Or it could be that the estimator is totally wrong and he’s not getting a pell (that’s my least favorite option)

Add to that
the income protection allowance has gone DOWN by a lot for many years.

This FAFSA change was mandated three years ago. It is disgraceful that this wasn’t rolled out in October, with a decent beta test for issues.

I don’t disagree. But like many gov agencies their systems are so incredibly dated with piecemeal and convoluted fixes made over the years. I’m sure FSA has been and is paying programmers boatloads. What a mess.

Same. Submitted last Tuesday but D didn’t have a Fafsa ID prior so it is held up somewhere in the process. I see the same screen as the one shown above about unable to process because it is lacking a signature.

Is he able to log into his FSA account? If so, he may have a thing to click on that says Sign My FAFSA (or something similar). The link: Federal Student Aid.

Just finished fafsas for my future freshman, sophomore and junior. Once I got going, I actually did find it easier and faster to complete. Really hope I didn’t miss something!

I cannot properly complete the FAFSA because my FAFSA ID has not been given full access. Everything was fine, the ID created, IRS permission given, etc. and it was supposed to be “up to 3 days” to get to that last piece, with an email sent once it was ready. We are on Day 8 now and still crickets.

I wonder if some of the error messages and “cannot calculate SAI” are from people entering information manually (which it would let me do) that should (and in fact MUST) be automatically populated from the IRS info.

Did you reach out to FSA? I absolutely would do so, in case it might help. I think that emailing might be best, so that you can explain the situation in detail (including dates) and request resolution for your ID issue. This is not a FAFSA simplification issue
it is an FSA ID issue. But it might be tied into the FAFSA issues
but you need to ask about it.

I waited 12 days with no email letting my son and I know that our IDs had been verified. Never received such emails. But when we logged and clicked the continue button it seemed to work. So possible your ID is verified but you don’t know. Also we had my son login first and complete his section (including the “invite mom” thing). Then I went in via the emailed invite.

The signature thing was tricky. All the other sections you could expand and it’s where you would make edits/add answers. That “signature” block–there is nothing you do INSIDE the block to “sign”. Instead you click the continue button at the bottom of that review page and the “signing” is on the next page. Not intuitive at all

Daughter applied for her FSA ID last Tuesday. Form still says “in review” and that we cannot submit it without a Signature. Does that mean they are still clearing the FSA ID? I can’t get into the actual form, I just see the “in review” part.

Thank you for the detailed information!!

The last time I checked it was still not pulling in the information so I deleted the whole thing and thought I would wait a bit.

Today I had D24 fill out her part and send me the invite, and it worked
mostly. I have seen so many people having signature problems that I became paralyzed at the last step of signing.

Who signs first? Me or D24? Does it matter?

(And nope, no email confirming when the IRS data was good to go, so for others in this boat I guess keep checking every day, and don’t expect an email or for it to be within 3 days).

I saw this information today which seems to be some good info:

We were able to connect with someone who confirmed we will all have the opportunity to edit/update the form prior to it being reviewed by the schools. They said it would happen at the end of January and the edits we make will update in realtime and would not cause any delay in the schools getting the forms on time.

We just submitted FAFSA to one school that has a very close deadline. But it looks like we are unable to add other schools to the form till the end of January. Is my interpretation correct? Is there a workaround for this?

(Apologies if this question has been covered already.)

Correct. Additional schools can’t be added until you are able to access the FAFSA. It appears that this will not happen right away. It’s possible that it may happen before the end of January, but it is not possible yet. Just keep watching
when the student is able to access their FAFSA, they will be able to add schools, sign and submit.

We had a similar problem. Then I logged in tonight and it was submitted and in review.

Have you logged in as both parent and child and tried to sign?

Thank you @kelsmom. I could be interpreting your statement incorrectly. We were able to submit the FAFSA form to one school. So, when you say access the FAFSA, do you mean some other page that is not active in the student’s account yet?

Apologies for asking very basic questions. This is my first go.

Aren’t everybody’s in review right now? Has anybody moved to “processed”?
