Patriot Guard

I have a few points.

1) So long as we keep the heavy political discussions on the SA Parents board, I don’t see anything wrong with discussing general military issues. In fact, I love it. These are issues our kids will be dealing with and hearing so many points of view can be eye-opening.
2) There are some politicians I admire and respect. There are some I completely loathe. Most are in between on the respect-o-meter. I desperately want to respect whoever is the commander-in-chief no whether I agree with his (her?) politics or not.
3) I hate to see someone like Phelps receive so much press as if his insane opinions are at all meaningful or worse yet, becoming mainstream. I would like to take a more active role in promoting information of an organization like the Patriot Guard Riders. I’m not quite sure how, but they should be getting the all positive press possible.
4) Like Jamzmom, I try to keep out of the political discussions. I’d rather discuss boots, etc. with Spidermom. And I’d rather tease Bill about being our first real curmudgeon turned addict or laugh out loud at aspen’s jokes. I also love the history from shogun. However, I recognize that there is a time and place for it on this board. Let’s just remember that we like each other and that we’re here to continue supporting our kids.

(Ok, just tell me I sound more corny than usual today. Just got back from 3 days in Vegas and I’m sleep-deprived.)

More or less, I agree with you all. Not angry at anybody. Somewhat tired of the few that seem to “know it all” when they don’t even have a child at the Academy or haven’t attended in many, many years; tired of the “one-dimensional” responses that seem to berate any post that reflects a viewpoint differing from that of the posted.

Whomever said it is correct: As I understand it [and I am sure that somebody could look at the terms of service to see if this is accurate] these threads were intended to discuss COLLEGE-RELATED information. These are not political threads. In another thread [I think on the USNA thread] there was a signifcant diversion from a person that was “wondering” about qualifications for USNA. The gung-hos pounced on somebody that was questioning another [I think it was assumed that the other was a mid] for being slightly negative . . . .or , who knows, something like that. [You can look for yourselves if you want an exact analysis.] The discussion eventually, inevitably it seems in the past few months, turned political. The Blowhards versus some long-time Logicals.

I don’t have a dog in the fight over the whatever group attending funerals. It is, however, very sad that this group of [yes] conservative folks think this is the appropriate way to espouse their beliefs. [I would REALLY love to know if what they say they believe is an accurate reflection of what they TRULY believe.] It’s a crazy country right now; I worry for the next twenty years.

So, yes, the point is: that both sides really need to stop. The belligerence is counterproductive. I seriously doubt that anything you say, however well-reasoned, will have any impact on the other side. [Just as what I am saying here will likely have little impact.] Does it really make anybody feel superior to point out the errors of an anonymous posting? Do you really believe that we have greater respect for you because of what you post?

AFDAD: Why are you surprised at the direction of this thread? The thread is entitled Patriot Guard. In a general sense, you might rather ask: What does this thread have to do with the Service Academies? I suppose, since this thread is a subset of Service Academy Parents, it reflects a topic that is of interest to the parents. If you look at it that way, then all of the political discussion on here is relevant. If one thinks these threads sh/ remain relevant to “underwear and boots,” then this thread is, by its very nature, inappropriate.

I am not angry at anybody, just, as many of you are, getting tired of the tirades. Thus, my example is to point out that flaws can be detected in either side of the argument. That’s what I do for a living–look for flawed arguments. [I suppose that is why some on this thread “hate” lawyers so much; some deep psychological inability to recognize one’s own shortcomings or something like that.] The dare that I referred to as being on another post was something along the lines of: [and I paraphrase] Find me a conservative that is angry at the military; find me a conservative that is anti-military. [Yes, I probably did not recall it EXACTLY as it was stated.] This was merely offered as an example of, most likely, conservatives [compared to Code Pink faction of whackos] that are just as disruptive to an otherwise very sad situation. That’s all. There are whackos on both sides of the fence;there are screamers on both side of the fence. Hard-core conservatives [or liberals for that matter] are intellectually hypocritical and closer to being a moderate than they would care to admit if they decry those that are “pure” in their beliefs.

Look at my records, I don’t post nearly as much as some do. What’s the point? I have friends that can intelligently discuss a topic as well as [and in many cases better than] some on here can. Most others can answer a question as well as I can. My remaining time on here is short. Some will applaud my departure, others will bemoan a loss. As BZ pointed out, [thank you] just trying to be a voice of reason. Nothing more. It’s a crazy time. I think, in some respects, crazier than during the Vietnam war.

The threads will continue.

Hee Hee Hee. Bill’s too funny to tease. I just get a mental picture of that dictionary on his chest, open to page 3,004, when he goes to sleep at night with his tie on. WHEW! If you lived a nano second in my head, you’d crack yourself up with some of the the images I get. Come over here and crack crabs with me Bill! I have the good scotch…

3 days in Vegas huh? Sleep deprived huh? What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas MOT? Did you win anything? I shoulda been there with you instead of at dinner with my ‘outlaws’, making those wedding plans. SpiderMom, why weren’t we invited? A girl vacation is just the ticket.

Well Bill, I for one will be one of those that misses your posts – even if I don’t agree with all of them. Your last one is beautifully written, and you really need to reconsider abandonning the CC site – We need you!

Unfortunately (?!) I have nothing to hide from my little jaunt. My 82-year old mother is a die-hard gambler. Her birthday is next week and she wanted to go to Vegas by herself. Her 88-year old sister with beginning stages of Alzheimer’s lives with her and said she would go along for the trip and to keep her baby sister out of trouble. (This is not what mom wanted.)

So I offered, as a birthday present to my mom, to take care of my aunt so that my mother could gamble all day and night. (You should have seen her shooting craps.) Now, keep in mind both of them have lost most of their hearing. Here’s a sample of the conversation:

Me: What would you like for lunch?
Aunt: Whatdo you mean? What’s wrong with my socks?
Me: Nothing. Your socks are fine. What would you like for lunch?
Aunt: Well, if the radio has a classical station, that would be nice.
Me: Are you hungry?
Aunt: Yes, I love opera.

I did this for 3 days with no e-mail or Internet access. I missed you guys so much.

Actually, it was really nice to have the time with them. They just mentioned that they’d like to visit West Point next. I think we’ll go back to Vegas.

Simma down Simma down. LOL “Do you really believe that we have greater respect for you because of what you post?”: Nope. Just want you to come over here and crack crabs and drink scotch & simma down! I’m TEASING you. It is important to discuss what will effect our kids. We can’t protect them from whats up & coming because our problems will soon become theirs but its fascinating to see the different viewpoints. I can’t find this kind of stuff on cable. But, I digress. We truly can help the kids coming in with their underwear questions. Under armor boxers. Its the way to go.

Remember the little boy at the end of the movie, “Shane”? He was yelling, “Shane, come back”. Bill, that’s what we’ll be doing if you leave.

Ackkk! Bill! I didn’t get that part about ‘my time is short’ & I had to re-read. Don’t you even think about it pal! I mean it. I will come find you. You CANNOT leave us to our own devices. Dang. Who would spell check me??? Seriously. Don’t leave… I’ll be good.

MOT, maybe it WAS better I wasn’t there with you. I wear some really funky socks. Talk to Bill will ya?

Okay, wait a minute, MOT was in Las Vegas this past weekend? So was I. Uh, does that mean the sexy mom who said her name was Ginger . . . could it have been? Well, I digress, perhaps she did mention something about twins but [the negation] I thought she meant her twin sister waiting in the hotel room. . .

Oh . . .I re-read the post, it was not MOT but her mother? Well, she did look good for her age.

I was one of those who let myself get sucked into political discussions the last few days. I just got back from a day of playing with my sister’s NINE 6 week old lab puppies in San Diego.

I feel sane again…

shogun, I hope your cadet gets to play with the puppies in a couple of weeks too! :)

bill, don’t make me laugh! Were you WORKING or PLAYING in Las Vegas?

usna09mom:

Yep, we have promised to tie her down on the grass and let the whole puppy herd descend upon her!

shogun,
hang on, I have to get a tissue to wipe away my tears…

I think I’ll barf, no sorry bark!

Bill,

The closest I may have come to you was when I saw a guy in an Old Navy sweatshirt walk through some casino. I was the one with the USMA MOM sweatshirt.

The funny part of this is that as I got off the plane, the pilot took one look at me and yelled out, “Go Navy!”.

shogun,

I wanted another puppy. I almost had my husband talked into it. Then when he came to the airport to pick me up, our most precious dog, barfed, not barked, all over the house. That’s what I came home to. No more puppies for me.

Thanks for the reminder, Army2010.

So should we get back to the political discussion? Or boots?

I just saw post #21, MOT WAS in LV? How did I become associated with a man wearing an Old Navy shirt? Was it the “Old” or the “Navy” that made you think of me. [Disregarding the fact that I have only been in an Old Navy one time and don’t possess a single article of clothing with their logo on it; thank you very much!]

I was in LV under really good circumstances: Being paid to be there, only being needed for about two hours, and having the remaining two days to myself. Although, [and you soppy ones can get all wet-eyed over this] the three-year old boy sitting next to me on the airplane made me think of a little boy who flew with us to Calgary for the 1988 Olympics when he was just a toddler. The same little boy that called us this past week to wish us a happy 20th anniversary.

Time flies!

Bill,

Happy Anniversary!!

Yup, I was in LVNV this weekend. And I didn’t mean you are “old”. It was just the connection to Navy.

It’s nice to know that you care about making us soppy-eyed as we love it so much. Heck, shogun’s sister’s puppies will make me all soppy-eyed, let alone a little boy or girl who reminds me of one of mine at that age.

I’m sorry if my beginning post was political or shouldn’t have been posted. I didn’t want to mention Fred Phelps…but he is part of the Patriot Guard story. I meant nothing political by it…sorry if I started something with politics. I just posted it because it seemed cool and I thought people might be interested in it.

i think fred phelps gets a bad wrap though. he really does have an interesting message that at first seems absurd, but makes sense (whether or not you agree with it) after some thought. I mean, his general premise is:

Our nation is turning into something like soddom and ghmorra
thus, why should God not hate us?

i mean most people in this country claim to be christian, but change their faith to make it more comfortable. i mean, call them up and talk to them, and they really know their stuff. i think to better understand him you should read the “Does God Hate Homosexuals Debate” here: http://www.mars-hill-forum.com/forumdoc/m070cont.html</a></p>

Soccer1458: No reason to apologize for that post – it was great. We parents get a little passionate about politics but we are all on the same side and like to debate a little here and there. Thanks for your post!
