Paula Deen

I love Paula Deen.

Novo Nordisk has cut ties with PD or, as they put it,

 http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/28/dining/diabetes-drug-maker-suspends-deal-with-deen.html?hpw</a></p>

I don’t really agree with the assertion that eating healthy is expensive. Fruits and vegetables are within reach of most households and a bottle of mineral water is about the same or less than soda or a sugary beverage. Organic produce can be expensive but places like Trader Joe’s make it less so. Chicken and fish, depending on where you shop, can also be very reasonably priced.

I think that eating healthy food can be time consuming because it often involves home preparation, but it is not necessarily expensive.

It is a lot cheaper to have a way of eating that centers on pasta, potatoes, rice, and so forth. When you remove them from the mix entirely and substitute leafy greens and low carb vegetables such as eggplant and cauliflower, it IS a lot more expensive, even if you cook everything from scratch, as I have always done.

It is also true that in some urban areas there are no places to buy real food, or so I have read on numerous occasions.

Those areas are known as “food deserts”. The USDA has mapped them–
[How To Find A Food Desert Near You : The Salt : NPR](<a href=“How To Find A Food Desert Near You : The Salt : NPR”>How To Find A Food Desert Near You : The Salt : NPR)

And the Today show beat the competition for viewers that day. And her cruise is sold out, I hear.

For my family, eating healthy isn’t more expensive-- but it takes effort to prepare and some planning to use everything in some fresh period. Versus popping some box or package into the mwave. Some hard reading of prepared food labels (sodium, fats,) woke me up.

As far as her recipes go, I don’t like the results as much as Barefoot Contessa (which is pretty much never-fail, for me.)

On Foodtv, other than the endless repition of some programs, a lot is about niche. When I watch the Next Star shows, you can guess who’s got a better chance based on what’s missing from the lineup. That cute RR clone isn’t needed. I’m pretty sure Pioneer Woman and Trisha Yearwood are all about attracting a market segment. Their food isn’t standout, to me. Same for PD, when she arrived. Fits some perceived need.

That’s exactly why I didn’t watch it. I’m been boycotting Today ever since Matt got rid of Ann Curry.

It’s no secret that the contemporary pop culture American diet is based on refined carbohydrates, which are cheap. Throw in high-fat protein and wa-la, you have our obesity epidemic. Dr. Benjamin Spock said that years ago when giving advice about raising healthy children. The mass produced boxed and packaged stuff on supermarket shelves is our problem. Fresh lean food like vegetables, raw legumes and fish costs money.

Legumes are one of the cheapest sources of protein you can buy; they are also high in fiber.

“As far as her recipes go, I don’t like the results as much as Barefoot Contessa (which is pretty much never-fail, for me.)”

I absolutely agree! I love The Barefoot Contessa! I have never been a fan of Paula’s recipes except for a banana bread recipe that I found years ago in the cookbook Paula Deen’s Kitchen Classics. It is very basic and easy. I always get compliments whenever I make Paula Deen’s banana bread!

“That’s exactly why I didn’t watch it. I’m been boycotting Today ever since Matt got rid of Ann Curry.”

I have been boycotting the Today show for the same reason! Recently we were a Nielsen family. It made me very happy to write down Good Morning America every morning!

Ann Curry would have been great in interviewing Paula. She would have lowered her voice to a whisper and let a (real) tear flow before hugging Paula for 45 seconds. As she did in her annoying interviews.

Curry was let go because she was horrible in everything except reading the news. Just imagine what the show without Lauer and with Curry, the Joker, and the two “blondies” only! Matt Lauer is (deservingly) the Today show and the people who fired Curry knew all that too well.

In a way, one could feel sorry to see Paula’s interview, as one should feel sorry to see your grandma cry. But then, one should make quite an effort to find her crocodile tears believable. No doubt she is sorry … sorry that her empire is crumbling because of her stupidity NOT to settle the case in private.

Oh well, she will rebound somewhere. If Huffington and Stewart did it, she will too.

I’ve secretly held a grudge against Paula because “Gooey Butter Cake” sounds so wonderful but the recipe is disgusting. Yellow cake mix and cream cheese. I feel very outraged because I wanted something like butterscotch. There. Now you know.

IMO, Robin Roberts + George S. at GMA crushes Matt Lauer + whoever is the co-anchor in Today. Can’t stand Lauer.

Bad calorie food is cheaper, readily available and more convenient. At some point in the future, I hope to change the “bad calorie” in my previous sentence to “nutritionally dense”.

Ahhhh Gooey Butter Cake! It is very yummy but you are better off not knowing the ingredients when eating that cake.

“Curry was let go because she was horrible in everything except reading the news. Just imagine what the show without Lauer and with Curry, the Joker, and the two “blondies” only! Matt Lauer is (deservingly) the Today show and the people who fired Curry knew all that too well.”

NBC needs to re-vamp their morning line up - make a clean sweep. I would take Ann Curry any day over Lauer or the ridiculous Savannah Guthrie. I have seen Lauer off camera in action around South Florida and he is a total turd. Savannah Guthrie - I had it with her after watching cooking segment after cooking segment with Savannah making the bozo comment of “Oh wine!!! That’s my kind of recipe!”

Yes 1moremom, dried legumes are relatively cheap. But your wallet has to be relatively heavy to afford FRESH just-off-the-vine beans and peas etc. Even frozen beans and peas usually command a premium price over the canned stuff and dried stuff.

Huffington- there’s a transformation.

I just don’t find it more costly. Some things, I know where to get them less expensive or shop sales. But I buy smaller quantities and/or make extra and freeze. My kids wont eat beans (except baked beans) unless I mash them and hide them in something.

You know, PD is not the only one who’s excessive with butter. We joke that a “a little butter” or most shows is way more than needed and a pinch of salt takes them seconds to sprinkle down. Finally, one chef explained butter is - what? - a flavor enhancer or something. I love Rocco DiSpirito’s healthier recipe books.

Let’s nip this in the bud, shall we?

I also had another point.

That wasn’t your point two posts ago:

And your last point:

…is essentially the same as my first point:

This was in response to this original post:

The actual problem starts when a teen uses a slang word and fails to understand why someone could be offended by the word. It does not matter if the meaning of the word is changing. Clearly when you say the word you are dealing with its current meaning, it’s current associations. Therefore, this:

is in no relation to what I was referring to.

A year into Curry’s tenure as co-host, NBC lost half a million viewers while ABC gained on them.

When she started, the Today show was on top. The show had survived the departure of Couric. They did not fare that well when replacing her with Curry.

Easy to find the common and weak denominator.

Gordon Ramsey has a far fouler, more insulting mouth than Paula Deen. No one’s boycotted him. I wonder why. There is a whiff of the self-righteous witch hunt about all of this.

Some people just should not get above themselves, NJSue. It is bizarre and freakish that her book is number one on amazon but has been dropped by the publisher. I wonder if Alec Baldwin will be boycotted for his filth today.
