paying for college myself

i’m paying for college myself, but my parents have considerable income. can i receive need based grants? or do i not qualify cause of my parents?

^it’s not that they won’t pay. it’s jsut i’d rather pay for it myself

thanks for any answers

Sorry, but no. colleges expect parents to contribute to your college expenditures, even if they can’t. don’t want to, or whatever. Unless you are an independent, meaning you are either 24, in the military, married, have a kid, or a couple of other things I can’t remember, your parents are expected to contribute.

^ that person is abs correct…
if people were allowed to do that, everyone would pull that trick…even the wealthiest people. Gov’t know thats. It’s just a very crappy situation for people like you with parents that refure to pay. You could always work to help pay…like most people did back then. Or take some community college classes to save money.

yeah, that REALLY sucks. My dad is contributing absolutely nothing to my college expenditures. But yet for financial aid purposes, im considered dependent on him.And he makes way more than 100k yearly.

The OP says his parents are willing to pay, but he’d prefer to pay himself. Why is that, chickenandwaffle?

One guess why… Sometimes money from parents has strings attached. A college friend had to major in chemistry or her parents wouldn’t pay a dime. She was more the liberal arts type, and called home every night in tears because she was so miserable.

it’s also the principle of the thing. I would rather stand on my own two feet than have to depend on someone else. Most kids I know see college tuition as an unnecessary burden on their parents who should spend the cash on an extended holiday or early retirement.

I really don’t consider getting financial aid from a school that much more for “standing on your own two feet,” as opposed to getting the money from your parents.

Vu_press,

You have a very good and valid point (and I am definitely not disagreeing with you)

When people look for need based aid they tend to forget who supplies the money for the endowments that are the source for the need based financial aid - Other people’s parents (through their alumni contributions, corporate donations, etc).

So those that get need based FA, especially need based are essentially having other people’s parents pay for their education which is why colleges have the mindset that the first stop in the FA process must be the students parents.

So when a student parent’s say that they are not paying for their child’s education the message being sent is let other people’s parents pay (which they essentially are through their tax $$ that fund federal aid along with their contributions to the endowments).

yeah i’d rather just pay myself for some sense of accomplishment or something

but what you guys are saying about other parents’ money makes sense too
