PBS Call the Midwife

The mother was also calling Trixie nasty names (the child’s face) and I thought she wanted to avoid putting the little girl in position of siding with Mom or Trixie

Last night’s episode was a spectacular showcase of Sister Monica Joan. I laughed out loud when Shelagh took the book for the maternity home, but said she would need to read it to determine its appropriateness and it was so cute how Sister Monica Joan learned to sing You Are My Sunshine. Lastly, I just love Fred more and more with each season and each episode. He was so dear in making sure the widow and her children were cared for.

Yes, the hospital scenes were wonderful. And how much cataract surgery has changed in the last 50 years!

I was so worried Nurse Crane was a goner in the fire scene and even after she came out coughing (given Jack’s death on This Is Us), especially with the warnings upthread not to look ahead. Now I’m worried about Barbara. She didn’t come back to the show just to leave again, did she?

Great episode this week. Quite the cliffhanger, though.

It continues to strike me that there is absolutely ZERO chemistry between Barbara and whatsisname the vicar. Totally sexless.

It was a great episode, with multiple good storylines. Sister Monica Joan in the hospital was particularly wonderful. I love Nurse Crane, and I, too, was afraid she was a goner.

I agree and I have a storyline prediction around that thinking, @Consolation . I wonder if it will happen…

My thoughts on the subject: Barbara dies, and the vicar gets together with Trixie again.

I agree, I don’t feel any chemistry between Barbara and vicar.

I also agree about Tom and Barbara, zero chemistry.

That’s my thinking too, @Consolation.

I thought the same thing, but it would medically be highly unlikely. Septicemia is a disease of the old, sick, and very young - people with other diseases and weak or failing organ systems. Barbara is a healthy young woman with no particular reason to come down with septicemia in the first place. But now that she’s apparently somehow got it, by 1963 there were a fair number of powerful antibiotics available to battle it with.

If they wanted to kill Barbara off to free up the vicar for Trixie, a far more likely and more believable scenario would have been have her die in a traffic accident or house fire as happened and almost happened to that family from Ireland.

I think I read that she had toxic shock syndrome? (They had discussed tampons during the health education class.)

No spoilers that haven’t been shown yet please.

Oops! I’m sorry @doschicos!

It will be an anachronism if they use the term “toxic shock syndrome” on the show. The condition existed earlier but the name wasn’t coined until the late 70s.

When the doctor was checking to see if she could move her head and it hurt to do so I thought meningitis

I don’t really see that a storyline of Barbara getting sick and dying to have the vicar get back together with Trixie would really work… it seems pretty trite to me and I actually must be in the minority because I believe Barbara and Tom,the vicar are a better fit than he and Trixie are. The same reasons that she broke off with him in the first place are still valid as she didn’t want to the role of a small town vicar’s wife and reassignments so maybe her unhappiness with that had led her to increased drinking in the first place.

I had to laugh about the one nurse being concerned about single gals using tampons…

DD2 was reluctant to use tampons and just insisted for a while to use pads. IDK if her friends convinced her that tampons would be better for athletic things going on. All of a sudden she was strictly using a particular brand of tampons. Before that, I was directed on exactly the kid of pads to purchase.

With the moving the neck for Barbara, I was also thinking Meningitis, but the stria on the arms was a bad sign for septicemia.

I do think they are going to keep us guessing.

“I had to laugh about the one nurse being concerned about single gals using tampons…”

That thinking isn’t rare today in some cultures. It’s still that way in many countries and not just muslim ones and it can be hard to buy tampons.

The first time I used tampons, I had my girlfriends outside the stall door giving me tips on usage. I have to say It was extremely uncomfortable and sort of hurt. The next morning I knew why! Not only was I wearing the tanpon, but the inner cardboard portion…bwhaaaaaaa.
