PBS Call the Midwife

My mother died of septic shock following some minor surgery. She had the surgery on a Wednesday, crashed Wednesday evening, and died about 48 hours later. It was probably not meningococcal septicemia, though.

Many of the kids adopted from China had scabies. We all knew what to look for and some people had cream for it from the pediatrician.

An infection that goes into deep tissue and spreads quickly is very dangerous. DD had a deep strep infection (strep test for throat was negative, but the eventually surgery was with incision just behind the tonsils, and culture of tissue showed strep). MD said DD’s infection was caught early (within 24 hours) - but w/o strong antibiotics IV at the right time, the infection could have spread to her brain, chest, or both. Life threatening. After 3 days of the high power antibiotics, and her immune system encapsulating the infection, over 30 cc of pus was drained to rid her of the rest of the infection.

Sometimes infections cause not enough circulating blood to fingers/toes/hands/feet, and these areas become necrotic/dead or dying tissue, so amputations become necessary - and life saving.

I know a guy that contracted a flesh eating bacteria and had a limb amputated to save his life.

I’m not clear on the dentist. Is he legally divorced? Or just separated? I thought he was fully divorced and just had visitation rights with his daughter. And the Mom said nasty things about Trixie the Tart in front of the little girl. And then the girl started having behavior issues due to the divorce.

I also thought he was divorced and not just separated.

That was so sad. Now I feel like a total jerk for having proposed the Trixie/Barbara plot twist.

Phyllis Crane/Linda Bassett is just wonderful in all respects.

The entire episode was so good: all of the subplots.

Do you think we’ll see more of plot line from this week’s birth in coming episodes? I really think the MIL set up the dad!

Just finished the episode. So. Very. Sad.

Hmm, I am the dissenter. I did not love this episode and found the ongoing sadness without
relief annoying. I reached for a tissue and then realized I just wanted it over and done with so maybe
something else would happen.

I adore Nurse Crane and expect her adjustment to the death of Barbara to be difficult and noteworthy.
The lines I did like was when Barbara said that the “next bit will be the hard part” as well as when
Nurse Crane told B that she had never know her to avoid the truth.

Speaking of meningitis, if you have a student going off to college, make sure they get the vaccine!

Love the show. Have never cried during a TV show. This show however brings me to tears almost every time! But I keep coming back. The books BTW are GREAT by Jennifer Worth. If you really love the show you show read the books, very moving, lots of history but they can be pretty graphic (for lack of a better word).

I agree. The books are well worth reading.

The recent episode isn’t loaded on PBS site…IDK why not. so am still waiting to see it…our AL PBS isn’t televising this right now so I relied on the web availability.

I watched it on pbs.org. No issues. See if this link works for you, @SOSConcern.

http://www.pbs.org/video/episode-7-luygx2/

Yes the link worked! DK why the pbs.org didn’t have the current link when pulling up Call The Midwife, still had episode 6 link as the latest.

Now I got to squeeze the episode in my morning, although someone in this thread revealed the death…

Still worth watching even if you know the outcome.

Re scabies: It’s still problem, even here in the US. And it can kill. :frowning:

I reliably cry every time I watch Call The Midwife. Usually when the babies get born – they’re so beautiful! But I was leaking all over the place during the Barbaratodt. Knowing it was coming only made things worse.

How sweet, JHS.

Even I cried during this episode. “Phyllis” is just so believable , as well as the doctor and so many others

“That was so sad. Now I feel like a total jerk for having proposed the Trixie/Barbara plot twist.”

I’m not so sure your proposed plot twist, or something akin to it, will turn out to be wrong. Charlotte Ritchie was already off the show when she married Tom and the couple moved away. So Barbara didn’t need to die to achieve that. On the surface it looks like they brought Barbara back on the show for the sole purpose of killing her off - with the result of leaving vicar Tom in the picture as the grieving widower.

They clearly have something in mind for Tom in the future. Otherwise, why bring Tom and Barbara back? They could have just let them stay permanently off stage like Chummy or Jenny Lee herself.
