PC's versus Macs

As an incoming freshman, what would be the best laptop to get? What do most people have and do the other people have trouble?

from what i’ve seen it’s kind of 50/50 between macs and pcs, you’re best off getting whatever youre used to. i’m pretty sure ITD people can help people with both types of computers if you happen to have a problem. i don’t know anyone who wished they had brought the other type (unless they decided that macs are cuter or something)

Alot of this has to depend on if money is an issue.
Macs are more stable, but you can get alot stronger PC cheaper (if you know what your doing though, a PC is just as stable). Also, can’t ignore the cool free software downloads for PC.

dont listen to them
Apple powerbook is the best way to go!
it smokes any pc laptop on any day
check my last posts about macs
You cant go wrong with macs you get no viruses and there hella fast and actually do everything they say they do unlike pc’s

Thanks for your comments. I would definitely prefer a Mac. I have used PC’s a lot, and the difference with a Mac is that you expect it to work. With Windows, you expect something to go wrong. However, what percentage of people at Emory have Mac’s and are there any problems sharing files with other students or faculty?

you can share itunes with everybody (which really is the msot important thing, trust me)
but if you want to send like a word document or something to someone with a PC, it doesn’t work. people withe macs tried to send me thsoe so i could print it for them, and when i try to open the attachment it says it doesnt have something to open it with or some weird message like that. they have to just copy and paste the document into an email and then i copied and pasted it back into word.

You won’t get viruses on a PC unless you don’t know what your doing. In the past 5 years, I have gotten 0 viruses.
Macs are not faster then PCs. Speed depends on your processor, and the PowerPC processors used in Mac where better at one time, but that is clearly no longer the case. Apple has already announced it is moving to a processor built by Intel that similar to the Centrino.

Yea, but the operating system results in a faster mean time on most processes. The Mac operating system is far and away better than any Windows to date. Sorry, it’s true.

I’ve used both PC’s and Mac’s and far and away prefer the Mac. My uncle does a lot of graphics at work, and he says that he has never seen a Mac crash even once in his entire career. I don’t that think it matters if the Mac OS runs on Apple manufactured hardware or Intel hardware or anything else. It is the OS that matters. People often say that PC’s work fine provided you know what you are doing. One, why should people have to work hard to make it work? Two, aren’t you insulting me when you say that? Three, they still have problems.

I would get a Mac for Emory provided the culture isn’t totally Windows and people don’t have trouble sharing files. Thanks to everyone for their comments.
