I don’t know why I find this so fascinating, but I do. I’m not sure I personally would go to the effort of getting a special toilet and hauling my urine elsewhere, but I don’t think it’s that weird at all. Anyone have experience with this?
No experience with human urine but I have used tons of different animal manures over the years in my vegetable garden. When I had goats, the bedding which was full of both urine and manure was a great fertilizer.
For some reason human waste is a bit more off-putting to me. No logical explanation for that either.
I saw it and it made me feel better about upcoming changes in the water system here in Scottsdale (our winter home). They will soon begin recycling all our wastewater for tap water.
Darn, I have well water so i don’t see that happening here at my house. I’m ok with that. I have thought for a long time that we should have grey water systems to separate the sewage from bathroom / kitchen sink, laundry water waste that could be easily reused as the input to the toilets or to water lawns, etc. That could be done at individual properties.
As for watering plants, there’s something about rainwater, I believe it’s the nutrients it picks up from the atmosphere, that makes the plants perk up and take off.
Humans can shed a bunch of contagious stuff… if the waste is composted to the point it has been effectively sterilized, no big deal. Remember the potatoes grown by Matt Damon in The Martian?
Oh, I get that. As I said I use certain animal manures all the time.
I watched the video and was relieved to see that the captured urine was collected locally and then pasteurized.
Sidebar - This low tech urinal/tank system alternative to special toilets was interesting. Might work better than a potty chair for elderly men? (They say women can use it, but that might take some good coordination balance). Perhaps I should double-post at Caring for Parents thread.
