Yes, this is another one of those housing questions Can someone lists the advantages and disadvantages of the Pelham Hall, please? I’m an incoming freshman. I think that I have heard that there’s only singles in that dorm, therefore I chose it because I feel like I can’t study well with a room mate and prefer to be in singles on my first year. However, Pelham is in Mount Vernon campus…correct? So I just can’t decide, so please can someone contribute a little advice? Thank you! :>

I’m an incoming freshman as well and I chose Pelham as my first choice. These are my thoughts, and I really hope they help you a little.

The only negative that I can think about is it’s price. Granted, it is so NOT the priciest dorm on both campuses and you do get what you are paying for, if not more. It’s a whole new dorm for a darn reasonable price. But some people’s FA package does not support it - like mine. So that means more money that initially thought will be spent on dorming. If you have outside scholarships, or better yet if you can afford it, that’s not a problem then.

At first, after reading people’s thoughts in forums about the Vern, I dreaded being stuck there. However, after my visit for the Admitted Students Day, I knew I wanted to live in one of those dorms. And as I saw Pelham, almost done, I immediately clicked with it. The deciding factor for me was that the Civic House theme is located at Pelham; community service is an essential part of me.

As an only child, I have really never been taught to share or get along with another person in one room, although my best friend is like my sister and I have learned a great deal from my four years with her. So I wanted a single room but also roomates. Thus, the Pelham suites seemed ideal for my plans. I also prefer to have my own little space - for my sake and that of a roomate - while taking care of a bigger common space with other people. The suits are definitely a good size for four people; the bathrooms are a bit small but I don’t mind. The common area is lovely and so is the small kitchen area within the room. The whole floor has access to one large kitchen - AMAZING STATE OF THE ART design haha - and its own laundry room. I also like how the fitness center and the dining area are within the building. Pelham is pretty close to the Vern Express stop and it has a gorgeous view of the tennis court. I really love the building. From what I heard, there’s a pool on the Vern, which I find so awesome!

This is all I could think of at the top of my head. The real question is whether you would like to live in FB or MVC, and that is a choice you should make based on your character.

I should really study for AP tests now… but I digress.

ill put it like this…if pellham was on foggy bottom, it would be open EXCLUSIVELY for seniors…i mean its 4 SINGLE bedrooms, a KITCHEN, a LIVING ROOM, and 2 BATHROOMS!..like thats amazing…plus some of the rooms overlook the D-1 sports field for soccer and lax…plus the tennis courts…it is AWESOME…has its own eatery, theater, painting room…and soo more…the only downside (or upside depending who u are) is its on the MVC…but trust me, as an incoming freshmen i thought the MVC was soo stupid and id never go there…the MVC is def underrated…give it a thought atleast

But even if I get to stay in Pelham, a MVC, I can still take classes in the FOggy Bottom area, right?

autumm: absolutely you can take classes in both campuses! there is only one GW, and you are GWU!

Oh okay thanks :] Just one more question for those of use who want to be in MVC, I know that it’s quite far away from Foggy-the main campus, 30 minutes or so…Has any of you experienced any disadvantages of having to travel far away for classes or disconnected from social lives or know someone who does?

Sorry for posing too many questions, I’m the first child to go to college so I am very shaky about these things…

autumnchocolate…you must have been misinformed…it doesnt take 30 min to get to the MVC…it takes toughly 15 min…meaning ive gotten there in as quick as 8-9 min…and it has taken me up 20 min to get there (ive actually jogged to MVC in 30 min)…so the only disdvantage would be that you would have to plan extra time to get to classes between campuses…as for the social lives, its only natural that u will form most of ur friends based off where you live…with that said, u are in no way cut off from the rest of campus…its all based upon ur openess to meeting people in general…

Great! I’m sure I’ll have enough time to go back and forth between classes, right? I have chosen Pelham as my first choice :]

Yay! Welcome to the club. Now let’s hope we get our first choice, autumnchocolate. Crossing my fingers :D

Yaaaaay! How much more money do we have to pay for the Pelham dorm as opposed to the other ones though? I’m quite curious about the price tag…

Check this out: http://living.gwu.edu/merlin-cgi/p/downloadFile/d/24355/n/off/other/1/name/RateChart2010-2011,breakdownbypricepdf/ ~ You can compare them all now ~

Oh my god thank you so much~ I am definitely staying in Pelham now I have heard that they are trying to get people to stay in Pelham so I think we would have a good chance of staying in there!

You are welcome I really want to live in Pelham, even though people “warned” me to stay away from the Vern. I was told the housing people were desperate to get people to live in the other campus, because Foggy Bottom is quite popular. Let’s hope it works on our favor! ;D

Are all the rooms in Pelham singles? Or are they suites of four, with single rooms? S is interested, but would prefer a roommate.

On the tour, the guide mentioned that it was all suites of four; the demo room was in fact a suite. The website, however, mentions that Pelham has doubles and singles so I am not completely sure.
Is there any way that we can secure a single room in Pelham?

From what I was told by my friend who attends GW, nope - it’s left to luck from there on.

D: Waaaah. Aren’t most of the rooms in Pelham single anyway?

When we toured Pelham during admiited freshman day - all rooms were singles. Hope they didn’t somehow change this.

The young woman I spoke with at Housing said that they are suites, each with four singles, a common room, and a bathroom. She said there are also some doubles, but they are not part of the theme housing and cannot really be requested – I got the impression that they will be randomly assigned to other students.
