Penalty for not appearing for the SAT/ACT test on the test date

Hello,

If one registers for a test date and then feel if they did not prepare adequately. is there a downside to not taking the test that date or trying to postpone to another date?Do the colleges get the score as a zero or something?

just go online and reschedule for a different date in the future

The test is not scored, so colleges will not know. There is no downside, except if the later date conflicts with something else. but from the admissions perspective, it does not matter. Just reschedule if needed.
