Hi all

A number of people have mentioned the teacher Penelope (Penny) Bitzas to me in the last few months. Does anyone have experience with her or know someone who does? I am looking at a summer program and I have to choose a teacher preference (she is on the faculty). I know she has a big reputation and her students win the Nat Council Auditions, but what is she really like?

YES. Lovelovelovelove her! She is the best teacher in Boston. I assume your talking about the Bel Canto Institute in Florence, Italy? I am applying too and I have Penny as my first choice and Patricia Misslin as my second. Maybe we’ll see each other there! :)

I was never a student of Ms. Bitzas, although I did audition for her studio at one point in time (was not accepted), however, a little friend of mine by the name of Michelle Johnson was her student. Michelle has said that Penny’s work with her was a “godsend” and perfected her technique after her undergrad got her a bit mixed-up. Michelle Johnson was a winner of the Met’s National Council Auditions this past year.

Penny is a fantastic teacher for just about any voice type and is a great teacher for both undergrads and grads (a very rare quality). She is indisputably one of the top voice teachers in the US.

Bassbari94 – This is a really weird coincidence because I just posted asking about Penelope Bitzas on another forum 3 days ago. You should check out the New Forum for Classical Singers, where I just started a thread asking the almost IDENTICAL question! Go to the “Recommendations and Warnings” section.

Also, if you search Penny’s name in that forum you should be able to dig up a lot of threads about her. That forum is a much better place for finding info about voice teachers.
