@jarrett211 - ED2 to NYU is good for a couple of reasons:
Even though it is a binding admission, but you can easily break it because NYU will NOT give any money. If there is any other school which will give a decent scholarship (if you have some backup schools), you can easily break the contract. This may not be possible with Tufts (as its private and will definitely give scholarship to make you not be able to break the binding contract).
If you are looking to get into the Stern school (for example), then the acceptance rate of ~33% is definitely NOT true. Some of NYU's programs are the best in the country and their acceptance rate is extremely difficult.
Bottom-line: NYU is a great school, if it matches what you want to do. IMO, it is a bit expensive in these days because I do NOT prefer to graduate with a loan when jobs are becoming fewer and fewer.
NYU Stern is truly an excellent school. Both my girlfriend’s parents are professors there and they talk about how well-reputed it is in the business world (not just in NYC, although it does have the NYC connection).
btw hi guys. I have been following this thread for a while now as well. have been using it to resolve my impatience with the early results just like everyone else
Its also a great school for ED2 because you can reject them anytime (good reason being scholarship amount), if you have a better option (say Penn or Cornell, etc.).
It all depends on what you want to do.
If you are looking to do a pre-med degree, going to NYU is a total waste (IMO).
But, if you are looking for theater major or finance, then competition is much more than IVYs.
My counselor said he talked with the PENNN regional admissions director in my area and my counselor told me the director said Penn does not really look to subject tests anymore as acrucial admittint factor. Anyone heard anything like this as well?
@jarrett211 came from a love for design really, and wanting a practical job from that. Also sprouted from a TED talk by Taraharu Tezuka. I think you’ll figure something out with archaeology!
Penn won’t defer because they haven’t received a November score. Most people have taken an SAT before and on the Penn website it says that “it reserves the right to make decisions based on the current scores and applications it has”. Also I don’t think you have to list them as a recipient before you take the test, either way CollegeBoard sends the scores at the same time.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I know we are all super tense right now but hopefully everyone can take this day to relax and stop stressing so much. I know we’re all probably sick of hearing it, but everything will turn out right in the end and we should all enjoy this time with family and friends.
I’m not doing NYU ED2 because I’m also applying to Columbia and hold on to that little hope I might get in there. If I was applying to Stern, I would absolutely apply NYU ED2 because of obvious reasons, but I’m applying to CAS for Philosophy. NYU has one of the best philosophy departments in the world, though. Assuming I’m applying to NYU RD, would you still apply to those other schools?
@jarrett211 - if you interested in Philosophy and NYU has one of the best Phil. dept in the world, wonder why would you NOT ED2? If Columbia has a better rating, then it makes sense.
@shivaya Columbia is just all-around a better school, and the difference in quality in the departments would be negligible. Point is I would go to Columbia over NYU. That’s why I’m not doing NYU ED2. The question I’m struggling with, is whether to apply to these other RD schools like Tufts which are harder to get into than NYU, and I’d rather go to less than NYU. It feels like a lot of extra work in the end for no gain except more security in the case I don’t get into NYU, but I’m pretty sure I’ll get in. The question is, is it worth the risk?
