*Penn Class of 2020 Early Decision Discussion*

I applied to BU Honors with the same prompt :stuck_out_tongue: @jarrett211
What is your definition of education? That is how I approached the prompt.

@TheWaffleMan149 Nice. Yeah I mean I don’t know if I can expand what education is into 600 words. Is the question basically asking what education means to me, or is it just asking for a definition? I feel like if it is asking what it means to me it would be a lot easier to answer.

Mine was 350ish @jarrett211
That length is an absolute maximum. An essay that gets its point across in 300 words is better than one inflated to 600 for no real reason other than the suggested length.

@TheWaffleMan149 Hmmmm. Never thought about it like that. Nearly all of my supplements and essays have been at the max. My personal statement was 647 words, and my Penn Supplement was 650 lol :stuck_out_tongue: I guess for BU I’ll just write until I have nothing productive left to say and that will be that. Thanks.

Lol no problem. Honestly, it is about getting your point across as concisely as possible. If an essay isn’t meant to be 600 words, then it isn’t. Kind of like how on the AP Lang exam, they gave me waaay more space than I needed

Or, you could simply respond with the famous Pink Floyd lyrics ā€œwe don’t need no educationā€

@TheWaffleMan149 You know what’s funny? In my AP Lang class we really don’t do essays. Apparently at my school, the class used to be called AP Journalism and it was only changed recently. All we do is read and write articles (as if I’m ever going to need to do that again). We haven’t taken one practice exam. We only just wrote our first real essay last week in class.

LOL We do lang in 11th grade and lit in 12th @jarrett211
It is a brutal exam BTW (the essay section with two hours nonstop of essay writing)

I’m just curious when the Questbridge ppl will get their decisions ? in the past, don’t they usually get their decisions a week or two earlier ?

@ZaGongShow Yeah on last years ED results thread the Questbridge people started posting their results as early as the 3rd

I just read they find out Dec 1
http://www.questbridge.org/for-students/ncm-important-dates-a-deadlines

@ZaGongShow We get our decisions Tuesday, Dec. 1st! Four days :’’’) i’m dying

QB kids get their decisions Dec 1st (Tuesday). We also do AP Lang 11th, then AP Lit 12th. My teacher didn’t even talk about the Lang exam until the week before, and I went in cold and got a 5 (totally unexpected). It’s a throwaway exam: that’s why no colleges give credit for it. I wouldn’t worry about it if I were you.

As for the word count, although I do agree efficiency is key, generally when schools have a word count of say 650, they expect the essay to be around that number (I’d say do at least 550). That’s my opinion on the matter, I guess. I had 650 for CommonApp and 620ish for Penn Supp.

My point is not to feel obligated to get close to the limit of that is not what the essay is going to do. If it is really THAT short, maybe reevaluate the topic?
I agree Lang is a throwaway

I’m dying to know if they have already reviewed my application… omg

When you try to work on essays for other schools but all you can think about is Penn…

I’m so scared right now because I love Penn so much and every time I picture going there I get sooo happy, and the thing is I’ll probably be rejected and miserable because I love Penn so much and not being able to go would suck so much.

Sooooo true. Every time I try to research other schools, I always end up back at Penn somehow…? Like I’m procrastinating writing for other schools by reading more about Penn, and this could either work out really well in the end or really horribly.

Yeah same I spend so much time on this thread and I probably should be spending the time on RD essays…

Yes!!! Same @lirn1130 !! I have six essays on my computer in front of me that I need to finish and all I am doing is researching and reading about Penn moreXD
