@rosewood98 literally same. worst part is we’re friends so I have to try hard to hide my bitterness about it.
@emilyskates whenever I see grades on a 100 scale I can totally understand them…idk why NY is one of the only places to use a 100 scale
If I got a 2140 then a 2300 for SAT, it really won’t hurt me right? Also I’m applying to Wharton but I got a 710 on SAT Math (despite my 800 Math II, 97 math average in school, 35 on ACT Math, and I’m aceing BC Calc). This won’t hurt me too much right? 710 is on the lowest end of the Penn range for math…
@ComputerAge okay you are obviously going to be fine. It sounds like you proved yourself in other ways on Math. One lower math grade will not affect your chances, especially with the 800 on Math 2
And the 35 on the ACT math will definitely make up for it.
Ya I’ve never heard of the 100 scale. So colleges actually see your percentage? My school just sends the letter grade without any pluses minuses or percentages
@piant1 ugh that would be bad. Luckily I’m not friends with the girl at all so I can just silently fume from a distance. Haha I’m really not a mean person, I just want to get in so badly!
@ComputerAge They understand that it was just one test where you may not have done your best. They’ll see your other tests as well as your grades in school, so one score is not going to counteract all your other consistent successes over the years.
Huh, my school doesn’t do the 100 scale or the letter grade. We just have a weighted GPA on a 5 point scale and an unweighted on a 4 point scale.
Do the admissions officers actually look at the high school’s grading scale? At mine, A is 95+, A- is 92-94, and B+ is 89-91, so it’s super hard to get a 4.0. Only 3 people have done it in the past decade, but I got sooo close. (Darn you, AP Euro!!) I’ve heard they generally only spend 6-8 minutes on each app, and I feel like there’s not enough time to actually examine it all.
@ihcany I’m applying Penn, UChicago, UMass Amherst, Northeastern, BU, Columbia, NYU, Washington University in St. Louis, GW, Tufts, and Georgetown. From Columbia on though, I have not actually applied to those schools because I am trying to save money, and if by some miracle I get in to Penn, I won’t apply to the final 6 schools. And the tour guide thing is kind of funny in my opinion.
@Makooks 6 hours for me as well is good for sleep. But I’ve kind of starting slumping already. I don’t really care about high school anymore. So now, whenever I have a ton of hw left to do and it’s midnight. I say screw it, and I just do it on the bus the next day. It’s like my own personalized middle finger to society.
@toffys I’m kind of an antisocial nerd. I kind of look like one too (glasses (I hate contacts. They hurt my eyes.), somewhat big vocabulary that pisses people off, etc.). The only difference is that I have a sense of humor and am comfortable talking to people and I can laugh at myself. Self-deprication is a virtue. Never forget that.
@SylvRsr None of us are really competing in reality. None of us here are from the same high school. And I didn’t study for the SAT either … kind of shows to be honest.
@emilyskates Yeah guys can be terrible. That’s why you gotta find the right ones … LIKE US
@SylvRsr and @emilyskates You’re both lucky. I’ve found 4 people from my school who have posted on this site, including 3 in the Penn forum (1 even called me out lol). And hundreds of people in my school use this site. I go to a hypercompetitive public school where students always talk about grades and scores. It sucks.
@girl1425 I’m not even close to that 2400/4.0. At my school there is only 1 person with a 4.0. That is nearly impossible to get. I have a 3.82/2220 superscore SAT. I’ve gotten like 4 B+ and even 1 B. We’re all human.
@SylvRsr It is impossible to know what percentage of the pool is qualified. It would probably not be a good use of our time. Also, I understand what you mean about the legacy problems with other people. I’m lucky enough to have a dad who went to Penn undergrad, but there is someone else in my school who applied to Penn ED whose grandparents founded a major department at the university (won’t say to protect identity), and are both tenured faculty. His stats are horrible, but he’ll still get in. That makes me really mad.
@Makooks I applied to CAS! PPE major w/ strong interest in philosophy, ancient history, archaeology, etc. I really hope they take intended major/interest into account. I definitely have interests that are not overrepresented at Penn.
And yeah we don’t do the 100 scale, thankfully. I get so many 93’s (like 75% of all A’s I have ever got have been 93’s, so all they see is the A).
@ComputerAge omg my school uses the 100 scale too!! I’m from PA. I kinda hate it because there’s a huge difference between a 93 and a 100 but it’s just an A on other people’s transcripts. Do you guys do GPA on the 100 scale too?
35 on ACT? 2300 on the SAT? Cool, I have no chance of actually being accepted.
@Makooks @lirn1130 Yeah I got 680 on my first SAT Math…
I hate that section. It’s designed to trick you.
@Makooks Yeah, I guess our regional rep is able to compare us to others in the region because most NYers use 100 scale. It’s annoyingly specific tho, because you get an A for every grade you get a 4.0, but if you get a 93-100 for every grade (approx the range of an A), you can have vastly different averages.
omg i wish i used 100 scale
Did anyone submit an art portfolio, specifically architecture people? I take an architectural drawing course at a local community college so I included three pieces from that course, and the rest was my best photography. I know architecture doesn’t look at the portfolio but do yall think it’ll help that my major is architecture and I already have done that sort of work?
@ComputerAge I’m kind of in the same boat because I got a 35 on ACT math and I have never gotten anything but As in my IB math classes but I got a 660 on Math 1(didn’t study and didn’t really try) and a 660 on SAT math so hopefully they take into account only my ACT and and grades. Crossing my fingers!!
So glad I don’t use the 100 scale because I got three flat 90s this quarter but they all just come out as As
No, I did not submit a portfolio. I was advised not to unless it is truly exceptional work. Like the kind that would get someone admitted to a highly selective art school
@TheWaffleMan149 Yeah same for me with a music supplement. I am no prodigy, nor am I exceptional at the piano, so I didn’t submit a music supplement. Hopefully that doesn’t discredit what I’ve done though. I’ve been playing for 9 years but never got any awards or anything.
I draw a lot, and I would like to think that I am good at it, but if I sent stuff to admissions, what would they say other than that my work is cool?
