*Penn Class of 2020 Early Decision Discussion*

Does anybody know at what point they stop reviewing applications? Like they probably wouldn’t still be reviewing applications a day or two before D-day I would assume…

What geographic area @ComputerAge ?

@decidophobia Hahaha same I didn’t know publishing journals and doing research when in high school was a thing before I got on College Confidential
Glad to see that many people, like me, don’t have career-related ECs. I thought I was alone

@ComputerAge You missed the chance to make an extra good impression to strengthen your app but luckily for you that’s also a guarantee you won’t have made a poor impression that weakens it LOL

@ZaGongShow Don’t know anything about non-domestic applicants… At least you’re not from countries like China where the population is over-represented

@emilyskates I figure skated for about 8 years then stopped spring of sophomore year due to rink/club drama and haven’t been on a rink since. Still miss it sometimes.

Apparently, I read something on the Penn website that they accept around 50-60 students from Canada each year…

I wish good interviews had greater weight in the process, but unfortunately, it’s more of a formality if anything. An interviewer said that he’s talked to about 60 very qualified and amazing kids over the years, but only about 2 have gotten in.

I know Penn favors Philadelphia residents. The Daily Pennsylvanian stated that it accepted 170 kids from the city last year.

What about other PA kids?

483 from PA last year. http://www.thedp.com/article/2015/03/regular-decision-release-2015-penns-acceptance-rate-holds-steady

I just know that Pennsylvanian kids, New Yorkers and Cali have the highest acceptances for Penn… cuz thats what it says on their website.

I guess me living in Philadelphia is considered a hook o.o

" Lmao I still didn’t get an interview… I’ve given up I know it’s random and it (hopefully) shouldn’t hurt my chances. "

It is NOT random.

A few things:

  • If you applied ED, and did not get an email about an interview, they might put you into the virtual interview phase. Some local Penn alumni clubs are not as active as others.
  • Penn tries for 100% alumni interviews. They wouldn’t just “ignore you” because if they miss some in the ED phase, their attempt at 100% is screwed.
  • It wouldn’t hurt your chances, but if you were emailed and phoned (both of which I would do if email only didn’t work), and you were not reachable, it would look like you did not respond.
  • If you really “fell through the cracks” and not by accident, somebody didn’t do their job as the coordinator of your region/area.

And the coffee shop story is odd, because we are told to do interviews somewhere quiet, like the applicant’s high school or a meeting room at a community center or public library. Coffee shops are not recommended, but even so, if the interview is in a public place, the interviewer should say what they are wearing.

Penn’s website says NOT to contact them or the local alumni club if you don’t get offered an interview, but they also say it will not be held against you if you don’t get an interview. I think there are enough Penn alumni on CC so that if any applicant has questions about Penn, they can be answered.

As for virtual, it is up to the interviewer. If someone is elderly or doesn’t drive, they might rather do a virtual interview. I have done virtual interviews in the past, but it was due to geography. Once an area gets up to 10 interviewees per person, virtual interviews are easier than driving around. For example, I interviewed a student in the next town from me, and their mom drove them to and from the interview, so that was somewhat inconvenient.

@TheWaffleMan149 NY City. Probably the biggest concentration of Penn alumni, but there’s also a lot of applicants from here.

I hope we get a bump for being from PA but I feel like it’s unlikely; there are probably a lot more PA applicants than others. Unrelated, but to other PA residents, are any of you Steelers fans? I have major Pittsburgh pride

@rosewood98 Absolutely

@ComputerAge I would not think anything of it. It won’t impact your application

@rhandco What I meant by “it’s random” is that it’s no reflection of the strength or weakness of my application. I live NYC, and I know plenty of kids who’ve gotten interviews. But there’s a ridiculous amount of applicants from my area, which makes interviewing them all tough. My phone has a voicemail set up and I check my email and spam every day. I haven’t received anything. I even called Penn Admissions to see if I could verify my contact info, and they told me that they can’t do that. The lady told me that not all applicants get interviews (only about 91%) and that they try to interview everybody.

while Penn may have a preference for PA kids, the higher PA acceptances might also have to do with the fact that there are more qualified kids who apply to Penn from PA just due to the proximity?
