I wouldn’t say I have any regrets, since all decisions I made wound up making me a better person in the long run, but I would do things differently.

Though I got involved in campus groups, I played it safe and hung out mostly with my hallmates; though they are all great friends of mine, I relate more with people with whom I did campus activities, and it would’ve been better for everyone if I had dove head first into my activities. That said, joining campus groups was the best decision I could have made.

Advice to you, look into literally every possible avenue of interest you have. You can join fifteen groups and then cut down to one or two, and it’ll make your experience much more enjoyable. :)

You should be careful not to fall into a routine that just involves going to class, sitting next to the same 2 people, doing homework, going back to the dorm and talking to people/watching tv etc. before doing the same thing again the next day. That routine does happen for many people mid-semester because there is less group interest in going to the many activities on campus than there will be at orientation and in the first few weeks. You should still go to events/club meetings etc. that you find interesting whether you have someone to go with or not. Also, your time in college is limited so take advantage; if you have always wanted to try out rock climbing once, go on a weekend trip with the outdoor adventure group – even if you know that it won’t become a regular thing for you.
