Penn previews

for the people who have gone to the previews, do you need to stay for the entire thing or is there time to explore the area? also, what exactly are the class visits?

You don’t really have to do class visits, so there is ample time to explore.

i would suggest going to most of the seminar/panel things…they were all extremely useful and not a waste of time by any means (especially housing and the student panel).

like thinkjose said, you don’t have to go to class visits…i don’t think many people did anyway since the panel stuff is scheduled for the whole time. besides, you can visit classes basically any day (not just penn preview days).

also, you can explore places (except housing, which the public is locked out of) after the panels are over. they only go until 4-ish, so you still have plenty of time to walk around the campus after that.

I went to the Penn Previews today, but I flew into the city Sunday morning to make sure that I was able to check out the campus and the city free of the PP activities. I suggest you do the same. There’s a ton of beautiful places in Philly (I had heard bad things about the city; I really liked it) and the campus is pretty big and really beautiful, especially in the Perelman Quad/Locust Walk areas.

I sat in on my friend’s class, and was very impressed. Even though it was a large intro class (I’d say 200 students), the professor was really engaging and funny. And it’s really great when he talks about his own cutting-edge research, because you know he has a really firm grip on the material.

Overall, it seemed like a great place, and I couldn’t be happier about going.

Does anyone have any classes they’d recommend for someone going to the Penn Previews to visit? There’s a huge selection and I’m not necessarily sure which one would be the most entertaining to sit in to.

I went to Intro to Experimental Psychology, with Andrew Shatte. I really liked it a lot. It was a big class, but like I said, he really had a good handle on how to teach to a large group of students. Even better, the seats are cushy and the backs recline.

Daestrivian - any particular areas you’re interested in?

lauraanne, I’m looking to major in either biology or linguistics (or possibly a language). I have a strong interest in both, although what I love about Penn is that it gives me plenty of other opportunities to explore my other interests (ancient history, econ, psych, etc.)

If you’re interested in Biology, visit either Bio 101 or 121. Other typical freshmen classes include Math 104/114, Chem 101/102, Econ 001/002, Physics 140/141, etc. Check out the site of the major you are interested in and see what the sample curriculum says you would be required to take 1st and 2nd semester.

Hmm…doesn’t look like any of my fave bio professors are teaching this semester, so no particular recommendations on that score - intro classes are a decent bet I guess. I don’t have much experience w/ linguistics so no recs there either. For Ancient History…McInerny always gets good reviews if he’s teaching this semester. Psych - Intro with Shatte is just one of those classes that everybody knows about. Social Psych (with Ostovich) is also good, she’s a great lecturer. Econ…no idea about that one, sorry!

Theres an econ lecture Wednesday at 1:00 in the Nursing Education Building Auditorium with Eudey. She’s wonderful.

I just came back from Eudey. She’s intense.

Any good professors for higher-level math? Differential Eq. or Linear Algebra perhaps?

Is there any reason to stay for the full day? I’m not too interested in what goes on after the lunch/tour and none of the classes peak my interest…

Do most students go with parents?

I went to the Multicultural Scholars’ Preview and stayed an extra day and I saw a lot of parents there. There are some kids who were by themselves, but for the most part most of the students had their parents with them.

Lucky, how did you like Scholars’ Weekend?
