Penn - Should I apply?

With a 31 ACT, do I have a chance at Penn

I have 3.9 GPA and have taken a rigourous academic load (honors and AP) and participating in sports, leadership, community service, etc.

Yes, you have a chance–your ACT is within the middle-50-percent range of students in the Class of 2016, and GPA and rigor of courseload are more important in the admissions process (Admissions Dean Furda often states that if you’re within the middle-50-percent range of test scores, you needn’t worry anymore about that part of your application).

And yes, if you’re interested in Penn, you should apply. Work hard on your essays, and show Penn why you want to be there as opposed to any other top school, and what you can contribute to the Penn community. And if you’re sure it’s your first choice, you might want to consider applying Early Decision.

you should apply…realistically though you probably will not get in. I do not see your other stats so I cannot make a complete judgement call but your ACT is on the lower side. Also keep in mind that 90% of penn students had a high school gpa higher than 3.75.

Yes. If you want to apply you should apply.

is the neighborhood around Penn like the hood around USC

…not even close… University City is an incredible place; the neighborhood containing University of Southern California main campus is decidedly less vibrant and much more dangerous, in my humble opinion.

You have as good a chance as anyone else - which is to say not very good. Still, you should apply if Penn is where your heart is at. Also, make sure to apply ED if you really want to come here. I know that “officially” it isn’t easier to get in ED, but I can personally attest to the ED round being somewhat less cutthroat than the RD round.

Never been to USC. UPenn and Drexel are not in the ghetto, temple is. Applying to Temple means you want to get shot or robbed which might lead to death. Same thing with UMD-CP but College Park is little better than North Philly IMO.

Lol, two of my friends went to visit Temple and they said it was awful.

Saying Temple is awful is an understatement. Its way beyond awful. Its dangerous, its racist, its non educational just like ghetto high schools. There’s a reason its ranked below University of Arizona. I would rather pay 7k more and attend Pitt or Penn State.
