Penn State branch campus engineering options

Anyone have any insights in how the branch campuses work? My DS is interested in engineering. This means Behrend. He doesn’t have grades to apply to Main. So, should he apply directly to Behrend? If he does this, will he still have the option of transferring to Main after two years? Are there any GPA requirements to make this transfer? Or will he have to apply to Main and get a 2/2 offer from Behrend?

He can apply directly to Behrend, as long as the major is offered at UP (and he meets the pre reqs) he can finish there.

APS lists a small number of PSU branch campuses that have engineering majors. Behrend (Erie) has computer, electrical, industrial, mechanical, and software engineering.

If the intent is to use a PSU branch campus like a (higher priced) community college to prepare to transfer to PSU main, be aware of the college GPA requirements to enter each engineering major at PSU main (see the “how to get in” page for each engineering major at PSU main).

Was looking at Chemical Engineering. So, Behrend doesn’t have it and you must finish at Main. Looks like you need a 2.6 to get into the major. But they say if the major is under enrollment control then it may need to be higher. Unfortunately, the Campus Student Transition Guidelines are under review. So, nothing concrete.

It would be difficult to get internships ie., work experience, with a GPA below 2.6, or even below 2.8-3.0 because you just wouldn’t have the knowledge base/skills to do a lot of tasks.
The GPAs I’ve seen are 2.6-3.2 I think.

Even if the major is offered at Behrend, you can do 2+2, you don’t have to finish at Behrend. The exception is a major offered at Behrend not at UP like, I think, Software Engineering.
