Okay, perhaps declare yourself a Paterno Fellows Aspirant. It’ll give you an opportunity to have smaller classes and since you won that scholarship I assume you’re a strong, motivated student. Basically Aspirants are in by declaring themselves then must meet some expectations to remain in the program. They have access to speciam resources&opportunities and take smaller, interactive classes with Schreyer students. (Interactive means you need to come prepared, readings highlighted, notes in your notebook, and ready to discuss.)
If it’s too difficult you can just decide not to continue and stop being an Aspirant.
Review your math before you take the ALEKS test for NSO because you really want to be able to start with the 2 classes below (Stats 200 and Math 110) so you need to score well.
1st semester, to be able to pivot to ACOUNTING from Psychology yet have all the basics for Psych covered:
You should take Stats 200, it works for both Psych and Accounting.
Econ 102 Honors or Psych 100H (through Paterno Fellows), Spanish 2 (placement from having 3 years of HS Spanish), the Psych freshman seminar (83S I think) and 137H the Schreyer Honors seminar that replaces English 15/30. That’s 15 credits.
2nd semester, you take Math 110: Calculus applied to business (counts for Psych/Organizational and Accounting), Psych 100H or Econ 102H depending on what you took 1st semester, 138H the 2nd part of the Schreyer seminar (replaces CAS100 and typically includes a field trip), Spanish 3, and any 1.5 credit Kines class (I recommend 1st Aid, or Personal Defense, or Lifetime sports) OR LHR100 (it’s the intro course for Labor relations&Human resources, counts for Psych/Organizational and would give you an idea if it’s something you want to major/minor in).
After that, you can switch to DUS and lose your scholarship and pivot to Accounting if you got As and Bs in your pre-reqs or if you want to stay in CLA.
You can complete the Psychology BS/Organizational option and add the Business certificate from Smeal.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! You are awesome! I will be checking in with an advisor during NSO and see if this will work. Again I really appreciate your help!
AFAIK it will work for the Psych BS and any later pivot to Labor relations&Human resources or DUS. (*)
All you have to do is, during NSO, say you declare yourself a Paterno Fellow Aspirant.
For Psych, you will need to get As in Psy 100H and Stats 200 (1st year) and in Psy 105 and Psy 301Y (2nd year).
Paterno Fellows will mean extra opportunities or financial support down the line, too. (You can read the link for details).
In any case bring the tentative 2 semester plan with you and you’re likely to be fine. Plus, almost all your classes will be on the smaller side so you won’t be lost in an ocean of faces in a lecture hall
(*you need to be in DUS to pivot to anything in Smeal so you would have to forfeit your scholarship at the start of Sophomore year -but you may find Psych or LRH just as good and keep the scholarship.)
Hello- upcoming freshman at UP here intending to major in psychology and pursue UX design as a career. I fully intend on majoring in psych, but I found there is a Human-Centered Design and Development (HCDD) major in the College of IST that’s definitely very relevant to UX… Is it possible for me to double major in both Psych and HCDD? Is it doable (is it difficult lol)? Does tuition increase? And if yes, is it by a lot? I would appreciate any advice and suggestions.
You could switch to DUS and take classes that meet requirements for both majors before you decide on a major and a minor or a double major.
HCDD looks really interesting and sounds like the major you’d need for U/x
How easy it is to double major or major+minor depends on whether you already have credits from AP, especially for Calculus, Statistics, Foreign Language, or anything else.
Are you in Schreyer?
If you don’t have any AP credit, you maximize overlap for both majors by taking
1st semester
Psych100 (/100H)
English 15 or 30 or 137H
Stats200
HCFD113
IST 140
2nd semester
CAS 100 or 138T
IST 220
Math 110
PSYCH 2XX
Arts or Humanities Gen Ed
This way you have all the pre-reqs for both majors. It gets harder to do both in the 2nd year so if you come without AP credit you may be better off aiming for a major+a minor, and since you’re aiming for UX I would pick HCDD as a primary major and Psych as a secondary or minor, UNLESS IST 140 and 220 aren’t super good (B- and under), because they are the foundation for everything else and a shaky grasp may mean a hard time in harder IST courses. In that case a Psych BA or BS + IST minor is a good move (the major’s pre-reqs and the minor overlap).
You pay tuition to be a full time student. What classes you choose to take is your business. You take 5 classes per semester and you follow suggested academic plans for one or 2 majors or subjects.
Thank you for your insight! No, I’m not in SHC. I’m still waiting on my AP results for Psychology and Statistics. Let’s say I end up getting AP credits for those courses, how would this help my course scheduling? I will be asking an advisor when I have NSO if I could double major in Psych and HCDD. Coincidentally, AP results come out the day of my NSO so I’m not sure how that’ll play out lol.
You need a score of 4 or 5 to get credit for Stats 200, and a score of 5 to get credit for Psych 100.
It would mean you could take just 4 courses your 1st semester, ensuring the highest possible grades.
Have you taken precalculus, precalculus honors, or calculus (you’ll need to score well on ALEKS, or you won’t be allowed to take Math 110, so review with your notes and Khan Academy online to do as well as you can)?
It would become
taking
1st semester
Psych 2xx A
English 15 or 30
HCFD113
IST 140
Freshman seminar or 1.5 credit KINES class
2nd semester
CAS 100
IST 220
Arts or Humanities Gen Ed
Math 110
PSYCH 2XXB
IE.,easier 1st semester and a 2nd year Psych course your Spring semester
Yes I took Honors Trig/Pre-Calc. I got a pretty high score on ALEKS and am allowed to take Math 110!
Would there be any conflict with course scheduling my 2nd-4th year of college?
Excellent! Plan to take Math 110 1st semester then, and only 4 courses (because a lot of these will be weedout, except for English 15 or 30), this way you will be set up to have the best possible grades.
So basically, Math 110, English 15 or 30, and 2 others. Or you could register for all 5 (Math 110, English 15/30, and the 3 others) then drop one before the end of drop/add period if handling this many difficult classes your 1st semester jeopardizes your grades.
No, no problem -there are literally thousands of courses and sections offered each semester and many students start with AP credit.
During NSO you can ask if you should claim your AP Psych credits or take Psych 100 without claiming the credits and in the meantime you can look at the schedule and see what sections and topics of Psych2Xx are offered to decide if you feel okay about any, and perhaps ask the professors who teach Psych100 for the old, retired final so you can see whether you are ready to start in 2xx or not (do specify OLD and your purpose, lest they wonder why you want a final exam )
Thank you for your insight!! I really appreciate it. Will be checking in with an advisor soon!
Hello again- it’s been a while lol but I’ve completed my NSO today. I ended up earning AP credits for PSYCH 100 and STAT 200. I know I want to double major in Psych and HCDD (BS) for sure, but I’m not sure if I should choose Psych BA or BS. I’m currently BA but my advisor told me picking BS would make scheduling classes easier for me, if that sounds about right.
Also I still have to contact IST to see how I should go about my double major because I haven’t schedule classes for HCDD yet… Your advice would very much be appreciated!
Yes, that’s correct, choosing the BS would mean more classes in common
Follow this plan^ (I actually went through the advising resources for you)
It covers pre-reqs for both majors. You can switch Math 110 and English15/30 if you wish or need to, but typically CAS is one semester and English 15/30 another. And of course you can take CAS sophomore year.
Thank you!! By the way, I saw that there were some options under Psych BS such as Life Sciences, Business, etc. Do I have to pick one if I switch to BS?
