Penn State Class of 2028 Official Thread

Thank you. I honestly didn’t think he would get in.

Looking for some advice regarding NSO…
My son signed up for a date in May, but is no longer able to attend on those dates due to a variety of commitments with him and us. When he emailed the office to tell them he would like to cancel and reschedule to a date in June, he was told he HAS to keep his date, unless there is an extreme extenuating circumstance. P.S. We also live in Massachusetts, so it’s a long trip.

I have since written to the office and will call on Monday to be a a little more assertive than my son was in his correspondence. Has anyone had any experience with rescheduling an NSO? Any advice is appreciated.

I committed to psu yesterday but I am still waiting on two schools that I was waitlisted at. I am a summer start admit wanting to do LEAP…however there are no NSO dates available to schedule. My family likes thing planned far in advance and I am coming most likely from the west coast (could be in the southern part of the east coast) so I can’t just go on a whim to NSO. In fact, I really need that last possible NSO before summer session as that would make it easier on my family, so how should I go about scheduling my NSO especially since I just found out that my parents want to know by the end of the weekend when my NSO is.

Note: both my parents went to small colleges were there wasn’t something like NSO and my brother started college not too long ago but at a higher ranked school that didn’t have a NSO. Also the schools I’m waiting on, I rather go to then PSU but I won’t find out about these schools until mid June.

Call and explain you’re on the West Coast, starting your Leap on…* and you can only arrive (leap start day-4, -3, -2, -1), how does NSO work?

Typically, for OOS students, NSO is in the days before they start classes.

*LEAP is registered ahead of time starting late March/early April, did you make your choices etc? Btw if you got a choice, I would recommend choosing CAS+ sth that you’re afraid of.

Very helpful…I heard of people going to NSO right around now so i was wondering how late it can be.

For LEAP, my task list tells me to register during NSO but my first choice is ECON 102 (microeconomics) and ENGL 15. But some other choices could work as well.

Call immediately and say the above. Use the basic start of LEAP for your date -3, -2 etc. And mention you haven’t registered for LEAP yet.

Econ102 is a GREAT choice because it’s weedout during the year but much less so over the summer (still hard but you have less competition to ask questions, check with the professor whether you understood , go over problems during office hours…)
Will you be DUS, CLA, or Bellisario?

Smeal and Econ 102 is a entrance to major requirement

I will do that soon. Thanks for your help!

Must have had good luck because I just was able to schedule NSO for June 23rd and 24th which is right before summer start and works really well with my schedule. Thanks again for your help!

Hello! I am currently in the College of Liberal Arts and was wondering if it’ll be difficult for me to switch to the Accounting major in the Smeal College of Business.

Recently, I won a scholarship that gives around $10k per academic school year. However, if I leave the College of Liberal Arts I will lose eligibility and will no longer qualify for the scholarship. I am still uncertain if I want to switch majors or not, but I just don’t see myself working a job related to my current major. If I have to switch majors, I was thinking of switching at the end of my fourth semester (sophomore year) because that’s when I have to declare my major.

Any advice would be very much appreciated! Thank you!!!

What major are you in right now? Labor Relations and human resources?

You have to switch to DUS ASAP.
You cannot go from CLA to Smeal/Accounting, you have to take all pre-reqs and be in DUS first.

At this point you may have completed the following through CLA : Math 110, 140, or 200; Freshman Composition ; Econ 102-104; foreign language 2-3; CAS 100; 1 science gen ed; 1 art/humanities gen ed.
If you are behind, see whether there’s a summer session from either a branch campus or a PA CC (or a Passhe school) that PSU accepts credit from, especially for Econ 102 or 104. You MUST check because PSU may accept the course as general credit (useless), but may not accept the class as equivalent to one of these classes.
You will not be allowed to take the Accounting pre-reqs if you don’t have the math and egon clasees and without the pre-reqs you’ll miss the window in terms of credits.

I am currently a psychology pre-major. Is there any way I can still switch to Smeal Accounting without transferring out of the CLA? The scholarship I mentioned is really competitive as only a few students were selected from the CLA, so I want to use it for good and not let it go to waste. At this point, I’m still unsure if I want to switch majors or not, but I’m just forming a plan in case I do!

Also, I found on their website regarding the Accounting major: “No transfer admission to University Park and no subsequent movement to Smeal from another college or major.”

Does this mean I won’t be able to switch to Accounting since I was admitted to psychology in the CLA?

Yes. You can ONLY switch to Accounting from DUS and declare the major if you’ve completed the pre-reqs.
It means you need to choose: give up the scholarship and switch to DUS … or not.
Btw, you would also need to make up for any deficiency from the list of courses I listed above, including over the summer (especially if you’re missing calculus, statistics, or either Econ class) so that you can take the other classes sophomore year. There’s also a required GPA (AFAIK 3.2, including all the weedout courses, so, not a given). You need to be in DUS to take the Sophomore courses.
Or you could switch to Labor relations/Hulan resources with an Organizational Psychology concentration. That would still be in CLA, so could you keep that scholarship?

I believe any major in the CLA would be eligible for keeping the scholarship!! Thanks for your help- I really appreciate it. Again, like I said before, at this point I’m still figuring out my choices so nothing’s really set in stone yet. At the end of the day, it’s a struggle to pick because of the scholarship (which means less debt for me)! I will be talking to an advisor during NSO next month

Wait, if you haven’t met an adviser or completed NSO yet, are you a rising freshman ?

Yes! I will be starting in the fall

Okay, the situation is not the same. Stay in Liberal arts for your 1st semester.
If you can answer these questions I can tell you what classes to take 1st semester and even 2nd semester that will keep your options open.
Do you have AP credit?
Are you a Paterno Fellows Aspirant?
What’s the highest level of Math and foreign language you’ve taken in hs?

No AP credits, nope, Trigonometry & Pre-Calculus and Spanish 3.
