Two weeks before the application opens!

Time to get familiar with the University
1/ you’ll be asked to choose an alternate campus in case you’re not admitted to University Park (ie., the big campus with 50,000 students). You can choose any branch campus nearest your home OR choose a more residential campus with 4-year programs, ie., Abington (very “suitcase”: many students go home on weekends, but nice dorms), Altoona (pretty, residential, students go to games at UP on weekends), Harrisburg (close to the State capital and Hershey World), and Behrend (topnotch for science& engineering).
YOU DO NOT have to attend the alternate campus if you’re not admitted to UP. You can always ask for reconsideration or simply choose to attend a Pennsylvania community college or PASSHE university such as Bloomsburg or Shippensburg.
Typically, if your GPA is below 3.5 and/or if you don’t have 15+ honors&AP/DE/IB courses (total) you’re likely to be admitted to a branch campus for your first two years.

2/ Majors!
There are more than 100 majors. Take the time to explore ALL the colleges and what they offer. (I once read a study where half the students congregated into only 5 majors, with the other half splitting over 100. Guess which had the better odds of admission?)
Interested in Biology? It’s not just in Eberly but also in Ag (environment) and HHD (human health).
Interested in Engineering? It’s not just in College of Engineering but also in EMS, IST, and Ag.
Interested in Communication? Beside Belisario College of Communication, look for majors in Ag, HHD, CLA, IST.
Interested in Business? Look at what CLA, HHD, EMS, IST, and Ag offer.

Spend time looking at what most applicants overlook - and increase your odds of admission by showing you’ve done your hw and aren’t just going for the most obvious.

3/ Schreyer questions are available

2027 Essay Question (500-800 words)
Identify an important global or local issue that you believe does not receive sufficient attention. Why is this issue often overlooked or under-addressed? Analyze possible paths forward and propose a realistic strategy to raise awareness and advance solutions. Finally, evaluate your proposal’s potential to create meaningful change, considering its feasibility, limitations, trade-offs, implementation challenges, and possible unintended consequences.

2027 Short Answer Questions (50-200w)

  • One of the Schreyer Honors College values is Empowered Growth. What values, beliefs or experiences have empowered you to grow intellectually and/or personally?
  • If you were able to go anywhere in the world, outside of the country you currently reside in, where would you go and why?
  • List your extracurricular activities over the last four years. This can include school and non-school activities. Please include any leadership roles you have had.
  • Tell us about your most significant leadership experience and why leadership is important to you. This could include community roles, family contributions, research, clubs and organizations, etc. Describe challenges you’ve faced and successes you’ve had in these roles.
  • List awards or other recognitions (if any) you have received in or outside of school over the last four years.
  • Reflecting on the recognitions listed above, which one stands out as having an impact on your outlook and why?
  • Tell us about a book or other media that has made you think about something in a new way.
  • Everyone belongs to many different communities and/or groups, including shared geography, faith, ethnicity, income, cuisine, interest, race, or intellectual heritage. Choose one of the communities or groups to which you belong and describe how it has influenced your life over the last four years.
  • Please use this space to share information you would like us to consider that has not been discussed elsewhere in your application (this is optional).
