This makes sense. Her W is 3.72 and UW is 3.68 so very close due to only taking 4 honors. Her 2 APās and additional honors are 12th grade. Her electives are all Aās but core academic courses are mostly A- with 2 B+ in honors English and B in her honors chem class.
This makes sense, but I (as an overanxious parent of a kid who applied DUS) donāt like to hear it.
I donāt want to wait.
You raised a good kid ā theyāre ready for this next step, and so are you. Everything will work out. No point being anxious.
Now that our daughterās application was submitted prior to the EA deadline, we wait! However, Iām wondering if she might want to switch her TO status, and wonder if anyone has any input.
She had an extremely rough time due to health issues during freshman and sophomore years which kept her home almost 50% of the time and required that she switch to hybrid virtual/in-person during sophomore year, but she still managed to get do well in her classes. AP classes werenāt really possible for her, though - she was already pushed to the limit of what she could handle physically. She also has ADHD but we were not able to get her accommodations approved by the College Board in time. She took the SAT 3 times and is still very unhappy with her score since her math/verbal scores showed different areas of strength at each sitting - if she combined her strongest sitting for each subject area sheād probably be able to score at least 1400, but currently her best is a 1290 (680 english, 610 math).
Her stats:
GPA: 3.99UW, 4.16W
SAT: 1290 (680 english/610 math) but applied TO
Honors/AP/DE: 6 advanced, 2 DE, 1 AP (calculus in senior year, no grades to report yet)
In-State highly ranked public school
Legacy, not that it probably matters: both parents, 2 grandparents, sister currently at UP
Applied to: Undecided major, Health and Human Development (probably wants Biobehavioral Health, but not entirely sure and wants to check out the other HHD majors before declaring)
Hoping for Fall 2026, but yes to summer start
She did submit an extensive list of theatre and music ECs, community service, and the optional essay.
Would you recommend submitting a 1290 SAT for this student if sheās really hoping to be admitted for fall 2026 at UP?
I wouldnāt. The score doesnāt bring any additional information thatād be useful to you or adcoms.
For HHD theyāll especially check results in bio/chem/physics; having had precalculus, calc, statistics (2 of those 3 at least, sounds like your daughter does); overall rigor in course choices, ie , 6 academic classes each year, 4+ units each of English Math Science and at least 3, preferably 4 units in social science and foreign language. The lack of honors and APs are the biggest obstacle imho but thereās nothing to do about it and the SAT wouldnāt change that.

is my son likely to get into Smeal?
Finance Major.
EA, Applied for summer session.
3.82 W GPA,
33 ACT
Competitive Public school that doesnāt rank
Upward Trend
3.58 9th, 3.88 10th, 3.96 11th.
APs arenāt offered freshman and sophmore year. Took 3 junior yr and got 4 and 5ās on all of them.
He submitted early/mid septemeber hoping to get a decision back soon
What is his UW GPA? Itās impossible to compare weighted GPAs because every school calculates them differently.
Saw on another forum that someone who applied on the 25th got accepted - OOS, Engineering! Thatās a quick turnaround! Looks like it started!
I saw that too. Looks like multiple got into engineering today ![]()
This is consistent with last year. Seemed to be a lot of Engineering acceptances early on.
I think engineering has a clearer picture of the type of student that will be successful. (Calculus, etc). They havenāt had the change to direct admission like Smeal, so might be easier to āpush the buttonā. Not surprising.
Yes, high stats students with high scores (either high math SAT or AP 5 in Calc), As in bio, chem, physics, some of them AP, fit the profile for academic success in Engineering and wouldnāt require as much perusing as other majors/colleges.
Smeal in particular is likely to take longer since the process has changed.
DD just got her acceptance to College of Earth and Mineral Sciences for Fall ā26. OOS. pretty high stats. As Alum, Iām super happy!!
For those posting about recent acceptances, congrats! If you would, please share when your DC applied just to better understand the timing. Thanks.
Congratulations ![]()
So that the information is useful to all readers (and parents nervously biting their fingernails/grinding their teeth/rolling their eyes)
can you list
basic stats
uW GPA :
any SAT or AP scores submitted :
if no AP scores relevant APs or total of honors+AP+DE+IB courses :
Major/College:
Fall or Summer :
UP or branch :
And be patient! I donāt think there is any path that is being followed so if there are others with higher or lower stats, in or out of state, TO or not TO get decisions, donāt worry -donāt read too much into the order. Good luck to those waiting!!
basic stats
uW GPA : 4.0/4.8 weighted
any SAT or AP scores submitted : 34 ACT
if no AP scores relevant APs or total of honors+AP+DE+IB courses : 9 APs taken by graduation, 4 exam scores taken/reported (one 3, three 4s), incl Calc BC. Taking Multi-variable Calc as senior. No DE/IB.
All core classes (non AP) were Honors.
Major/College: College of Earth and Mineral Sciences/Meterology
Fall or Summer : Fall 2026
UP or branch : UP
She applied in September, OOS.
Easier said than done, but I agree 100%.
Thank you ![]()

And congratulations
to your daughter for a terrific record explaining this well-deserved early admission to a topnotch Meteorology program ![]()
agree with the no path sentimentā¦. my older daughter had similar stats as my younger, applied earlier (in August) and didnāt get her decision until 12/21 (back in 2023). Granted - it was Smeal, not E&MS, but Iām not sure there is any pattern to follow. Hang in there!!
