Have any of those already accepted received something in the mail? My son was accepted a few weeks ago, and he received an email. Just curious if a hard copy something is coming also.
Have they also sent out denials? I have not seen anyone post a denial yet. If they have, then the lack of a decision so far for my son feels more hopeful!
Meaning there will be portal updates tomorrow night?
I thought it took a few days to go through.
There will be very few outright denials, unless the major cannot be completed by the 2+2 route (e.g., nursing, architecture, turf grass science). Most applicants will be offered a branch campus (possibly not their 2nd choice campus) if they are not able to be admitted to UP.
Not yet, unless they canāt be admitted to one of the ābasically a community collegeā branch campuses with 400-500 students ..
But remember: a decision CAN be ādeniedā or ādeferredā.
Also, remember that if itās UP or nothing for you AND your school has data to show you have a sufficient academic background as well as learning autonomy to successfully handle the pace, pressure, and academic expectations (*.) thereās reconsideration for a less competitive major or one thatās more in sync with your academic strengths and/or Summer. Itās a pretty unique second chance (and extra work for Penn State admissions) but always a big volume of the December through January discussions.
@jakemanpsu
Work has resumed but youāre right, itāll be a couple days for th process to resume. Sorry for the false hope. ![]()
(* Getting in and failing out is the worst. Sometimes, starting at Altoona is the best thing for a student. Sometimes starting in the Summer or choosing a better-suited major is better. You really have to think it through.)
Son is trying to prepare for his Schreyer interview next week but finding it difficult when he has not received a decision yet. Is anyone else in this boat?
Not here but good luck!!
Donāt sweat it. SHC admissions is a completely separate admissions process that runs in parallel with PSU admissions. The interviewer wonāt even know (or care) that they havenāt been accepted yet. As has been described by some of the experts on here, there are many reasons why someone would not have received admission yet, and canāt read into it. For the interview, have him highlight all the great things that make him unique from all the other SHC applicants (which tend to be a very impressive group of kids in general). Ability to communicate, experiences and passion, not grades and test scores . . . you know, all those things that donāt matter for regular PSU admissions.
AP Calc yes. Decided against the 4th year of language for another AP instead. My other child had 4 years of language + AP Calc, and one less AP senior year⦠Iām thinking it all balances out?!?! who knows! I do trust they land where they should. Both have had such great attitudes with this experience and enjoyed the exploration of various schools. I think many kids handle this all better than parents do ![]()
I wonder if there is a science to that. As in they are on a bubble and the interview could be a deciding factor to overall admission? I got the impression that they strongly encourage applying to the honors college as a way to show demonstrated interest, by competing a more comprehensive application. There is a limited number of honors program spots, but a homes application even without acceptance to it may bolster the chances of regular admission?
OR
Am I reading too much into it and interviews are just scheduled first come/ first serve. Admission and a scheduled Honors Program interview are unrelated?
When did your child submit their application?
The Schreyer interview is more a conversation. They have a few prepared questions. Have your student be themselves and let their selves shine through. There is no right or wrong answer. Some of the questions were philosophical such as if you had to eliminate one subject from high school what would it be and why. That doesnāt have a right or wrong answer. Keep in mind that it is a very competitive honors college and if not admitted as a freshman they have opportunities to get in after freshman year. I will say it is a very impressive honors college and hope your son gets in. Additionally, he will not be the only one without admission decision yet. Good luck.
He applied To PSU Smeal (Summer start) the last week of September and submitted his Schreyer application a couple of weeks after that. He put A LOT of work into the Schreyer essays. But, he understands that it is competitive.
Thank you
Thank you
I think your child is definitely getting in. Just asking because I was wondering if Calc and 4+ years of foreign language were considered āeasy decisionā admit stats. My older daughter ended up at UVA, with worse stats than this one (lower SAT and GPA) but also had 6 years of foreign language which I think made the difference at UVA.
Schreyer admissions and regular admissions are parallel processes and look at different things (kinda). Regular admissions looks at gpa, rigor, test scores, etc. Schreyer will do a deep dive into the actual transcript and look at rigor with intended major. The essays are separately read by at least two readers and sometimes more if there are discrepancies or differences or if Schreyer Admissions is trying to understand the kid more. The interview is another data point that can be used to help them make a decision.
He should be prepared with normal interview questions (practice them at dinner?) and he will be fine. good luck!
Thank you for this!
Has anyone already had a Schreyer interview?
Hi. Yes my son had his zoom SHC interview today. Lasted just under 30 mins. He said it was more of a conversation, no off the wall/oddball questions. The interviewer had read all the short essay responses and they spent a lot of time digging into them. My son had his resume in front of him to glance at if needed, but he said it went smoothly. Lmk if u have any other questions
best of luck to everyone doing interviews!
It seems like mostly the Intended Fall Starts got their decisions. Did anyone who put Summer Start get in yet?
