🐾 Penn State 🐾 Early Action Class of 2030 Official Thread

If you have good grades in those DE classes, especially if they were taken at a recognized college, you should not worry too much. The most accurate prediction of college success is success in college classes already taken
However Fall or Summer, it’s hard to be sure.

There are lots of choices, especially in HHD. You could look at their majors and at the concentrations therein. There’s Health Management and HDFS -both typically considered easier to get into than DUS- BBH which is more difficult(premed/pre health). There’s also Community Health in college of Ag, also considered relatively easy to get into compared to some other majors. And of course there’s Psychology in CLA.

It looks like a good target, probably 60-40 in your favor… Caveat: DUS is tricky this year since rules have changed. The more data we gather the better we’ll be able to evaluate.

Thanks! We will look into those. Is BBH more competitive than DUS?

Hi, I’m new here. My daughter (out of state) submitted as a business major on 10/20 but still haven’t heard yet. 4.6 weighted GPA, 3.84 unweighted, and went test optional. Has taken high rigor classes- IB Calc, AP Stats, IB History, AP Gov, IB Lang/Lit, etc. Good ECs- DECA, IB Career Program with internship, yearbook editor, etc. Strong essay. We know Smeal is tough but what are her chances?

DS applied on October 17, Materials Science and Engineering @ UP, fall start, got accepted today (ā€œtest scoreā€ disappeared around 6 PM Central today). OOS, IBDP, 40/45 Predicted IBDP score, weighted GPA 101.8/109.5, 1460 SAT. Ok essay and EC (few sports and activities here and there). I hope you all have good news

It depends. This year, probably - just based on the fact DUS is going to be less competitive than in the past couple years. That being said, BBH is tucked away in HHD, and many students who marvel at the existence of 100+ majors don’t bother actually reviewing what’s on offer and thus end up applying to Biology en masse without knowing there’s that super interesting major that’s perfect for premeds, pre PA, future therapists, etc., in HHD. And when fewer students know about it, fewer apply - it remains selective but is less competitive (the standards remain high but there’s less competition for those who meet them).

Congratulations :tada::raising_hands:
And wow, that IB score is seriously impressive.:star: I hope he applied to Schreyer. IB students can usually write well and should have interesting things to say thanks to TOK and the Individuals&Society approach.

Congrats on admission and best of luck in the future. I have been following your posts because my son applied to Smeal EA in October and still waiting. Somewhat close stats and rigor, except 1380 SAT(690/690) and from NJ.

Question, how do you establish a Lion Path Account? My son keeps going to application portal, but we are not sure how to establish an account in Lion Path as a non- student****yet we hope!

@Lmatz @Matt_D : don’t panic :hugs: It doesn’t mean anything. You just have to wait patiently even if it’s really hard. There’s no specific reason they haven’t gotten to his application yet.

I maintained an A or A+ in every DE class taken, however only about 6 of them showed up on my transcript/STARS so I made sure to list them in the additional information section in Common App. Is Criminology at UP a pretty competitive program? Should I reconsider for Sociology if I don’t get accepted or deferred to 2+2?

i missed that earlier - congrats!!!

Yes, Criminology is quite competitive because it’s nationally ranked.
Unfortunately if you’re not admitted to Criminology I don’t know if you can ask for Sociology reconsideration. It would make sense since Sociology is much less competitive but I’m having a nagging question at the moment :sob:
I suppose you could email and ask ā€œDear Madam, Dear Sir,
I hesitated between Criminology and Sociology. If I’m not admitted to Criminology/Fall, would I be allowed to ask for reconsideration for Sociology+ Fall or Summer?
Thank you.
Sincerely,
ā€¦ā€
Btw always treat your emails like you would professional communication. Start emails to professors with ā€œDear Pr. Xā€.
^ This isn’t for you specifically but rather as a general PSA because so many freshmen get that wrong :scream:

If not admitted DUS, how does one go about asking for reconsideration? Is there a form or an email to send the request to? What major would you ask for if not DUS?

Yes, the waiting is hard! Do you know if the Test Scores link is still available in the applicant portal, does it mean that they haven’t reviewed her application yet?

While we patiently wait for this darn button’s disappearing act… Opinions please on SMEAL admit for my son, applied 10/21 with fall UP preferred but he noted he’d take Summer start.

In State, 3.94, 30 ACT, 10 AP’s with 4’s and 5’s including AP Calc this year, 4 DE class credits, Eagle Scout, 4 year Varsity tennis, DECA district finalist, biz internship this summer, strong EC’s, really strong essay and lots of volunteer work. Sister and dad are alum if that even matters.

He just received his 1stQ gpa of 4.07. And when he applied in Oct he was working towards Eagle rank, but it became official in early Nov. How can he send these updates? Can he upload directly to his application account or would he send via email to a rep and how does he find that contact info?

Ty all for the great advice and insights.

Has anybody’s button disappeared yet??

My son has exact similar stat and applied to smeal. 4.1/1440 This gives me hope. what was unweighted gpa ?. He also applied for summer start as a option and we are in state. The wait is hard, but I am guessing we will hear anytime now.

Sending good vibes to your son! I know that the wait is brutal when you hear others getting their news. My son applied to Summer as his first and only choice. I don’t know if that made a difference in the timing or the pool of applicants. I now wonder if he ever would have had a shot for Fall? I guess we’ll never know but I am curious. We were very strategic with how we applied….because we felt his GPA may be on the lower end? I will be watching this thread for everyone’s news! Hang in there.
