Very few. Only Schreyer students have guaranteed housing all 4 years, and even they often move for jr/sr year - lots of student complexes in downtown State Colleges and along North/South Atherton (along bus routes, with bus passes often included; students can put bikes on the buses.)
Are there any others still waiting for a decision?
I applied OOS for the cybersec major (+ schreyer) with a 1510 sat and 4.5/5 wgpa. Mid ECs but hard rigor (lots of aps and honor classes). I did do my stars late though (on nov 15).
Iām genuinely losing my mind here from the wait⦠I know itās supposed to come back by 12/24 but my test score button still hasnāt disappeared and they will go on winter break tomorrow at 4:30 pm. Chat am i cookedā¦
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news⦠You will not hear by Dec 24 if your STARs was completed on Nov 15. The EA deadline was Nov 1. You will hear as rolling admissions student - they will start releasing decisions in January.
But donāt take my word for it - call admissions tomorrow and verify when you should expect to hear a decision.
I know it wasnāt the answer you were looking for, but at least you wonāt be mad on Dec 24th.
If you completed your SRAR on Nov 15 and itās not a typo for October 15, then youāre automatically in the RD group and will receive your decision in January or February.
(Advice is to try and complete the SRAR ASAP or by Oct 15-20 to give it time to process).
Since this has been a wealth of knowledge for my own child, I was wondering if you can assist with a friends child. He applied Ag Business Summer Session: 3.3, TO, no rigor, few ECās, legacy student.
He got 2+2 to Abington and wants to put in for a reconsideration. Thoughts on Undecided, Hospitality Management, or Education Policy. Long term goals of working in a business field.
Should he also wait to put in for reconsideration after his 2nd MP grades are posted or submit now? TIA
Does the student have a test score 1200+ but worries itās too low, or is the score lower/no score at all?
That GPA+ lack of rigor with no strong test scores to indicate perhaps rigorous HS with grade deflation make 2+2 the most likely outcome.
Education Policy wonāt work to work in business, especially if few/no ECs with children or with a broadly educational context.
Hospitality management is pretty selective (itās a top school nationally) and requires evidence of interest and/or talent and/or experience, ie., cooking competitions, waitressing⦠All of which would appear in the application already.
DUS (undecided and can pivot to anything) has traditionally been harder to get into than Agribusiness. However if theyāre undecided they can try that (DUS) and have Altoona as their alternate campus, since itās residential, not far from UP (students go there on weekends) and would be a decent outcome if they wish to graduate from PSU.
Typically Fall grades arenāt taken into account (only Fall rigor, ie., 4th level of a foreign language, calculus or precalculus honors, APs/IBā¦) but if grades will be posted 1st week of January he can send them as additional information as well as any December test results, as Iām a āleave no stone unturnedā kind of person. Likely wonāt help but canāt hurt and you wonāt have any regrets. He shouldnāt wait till February though.
Thank you for this. Helpful to hear your opinion since I am thinking similarly for this particular student.
GM! My daughter is asking for reconsideration from summer start to fall at UP (she was offered summer UP) What is the most appropriate way to reach out. Would it be an email direct to admissions or filling out the reconsideration form on her portal⦠or both? Ty!
@MYOS1634 Thanks for the valuable information. Does he have to take French proficiency test, or they will automatically place him to French 3 and ask him to take one semester French? Based on your inputs, I think He will have to take Alex as he is not taking AP.
Thank you for the prompt response! No worries, at least I wonāt be confused tomorrow haha
In my next life, Iāll try to complete the STARs on time lol.
Thank you Forum Champion. Unfortunately not a typo //>-<//, but itās fine. Wow this website is actually useful haha
I think there are rules for what level of language you place into without a placement exam.
One of my kids had taken it through the 6th level (started in 7th grade). She was able to take a proficiency exam and was exempt from taking those credits. She had to apply and explain why she felt she could pass the test, but she did all that.
The second thing I will give you a heads up on is that it is a graduation requirement, not an entrance to major. If he chooses, he can wait until he is IN the major before taking it. Upside? Language is 4 credits and that can hurt if not successful. Downside? Longer time and may forget more.
No, itās automatic. If you took through level 4 youāre automatically placed into College French 3 and only need to take a semester. (If you took 3 youāre automatically placed into College French 2 and need to take 2 semesters. You can also take intensive Foreign Language, covering HS level 1 over about a month, HS level 2 over 1-2 months, then the rest over the next 5-6 months and youāre done with the requirement.)
He can also take a proficiency test to try and test out but I think itās more AP level.
An upside is that by working diligently he can do well, itās difficult compared to HS but definitely doable if you allocate the required 2Hhw per class period and itās not weedout.
Yes heāll need to take ALEKS then.
Are EA decisions getting delayed until after break? I doubt that they are releasing them all tomorrow/24th.
Its crazy. I noticed my sonās stars account shows him submitting grades on November 4, they were due by November 5. It says penn state did not download them until November 8. Concerned they pushed him to RD even though he submitted Nov 4. Going to call tomorrow. Sigh.
Best of luck!! Iām calling tomorrow too because the wait has been so so so long and at this point they havenāt put our any notice about a delay of decisions so Iām just getting impatient.
Good luck to you as well.
did he really submit grades Nov. 4th? I thought the deadline was Nov. 1st? or was that the delay from STARS to the Penn State upload?
I would call tomorrow to confirm that his application was complete by Nov. 1st and he is considered EA. Better to know now than be waiting until the last minute and no one is in the office ā¦
The application deadline was Nov 1, penn state sent an email saying all additional materials were due by Nov. 5. There is a time stamp on Stars saying he submitted Nov. 4, and penn state did not download until November 8. Yeah, I am going to call tomorrow.
I havenāt been following along super closely around here since my daughter was just recently admitted to Smeal (summer start). So every major has a foreign language requirement? So sorry for the dumb question ⦠Iām sure this has already been explained!
