Congratulations
My daughter asked for her application to be reconsidered and the admissions counselor replied on 1/3 that she put the application back in for review. She checked the portal today and saw that she was accepted for DUS at main campus for fall start. I hope this gives everyone hope that they are still accepting students in DUS.
Congratulations
Congrats! Was the decision posted in the portal? My D24 also applied to BArch EA. Her portal still shows ā⦠under reviewā¦ā.
Still deferred here.
Thank you! It did show up in the portal, in the same part where it previously said āunder review.ā Her test optional button never changed, as some others had. The letter was dated yesterday but showed up in portal this morning. Fingers crossed for your daughter!!!
Congratulations!!! What were her stats if you donāt mind me asking? We just requested the same thing! Her counselor was kind of standoffish⦠He said I can certainly re-submit, but you need to know it is very rare that people get admitted to the main campus. Usually just the major will change. We took the chance because she is not going for 2+2, so might as well take the leap.
My son got his acceptance to the BArch program this morning! He was EA, so it was a stressful wait since the decision did not come in until 1/10.
Have a question on behalf of a friend, Iām sure you have answered it a million times, so apologies for this. Friends son applied to UP for English, did tick summer start box, but were offered 2+2 Harrisburg. What is the process to appeal to try to get UP start, they are happy to change major to DUS of something else and will do summer start. Any advice would be appreciated. He will have first semester senior grades available next week, should he send them and is there a specific department within admissions he should contact. They will commit to PSU if they get UP acceptance, should he outline this in the communication. TIA for your help, youāre a great wealth of knowledge for this forum!
He should email and ask for reconsideration for ā¦major, CLA, Summer start.
It means they already considered him for English at UP. Does he have 4 years (or 5) in a world language ? Ap lang and/or Lit? APUSH and Ap world or euro?
DUS would be more competitive than English.
He can try applying for the language he studied in HS or another world language.
If foreign languages werenāt his strong point, perhaps one of the āStudiesā majors - Jewish Studies, Asian Studies, African American Studies, Medieval Studies, Classics&Ancient Studiesā¦whatever he has a connection to⦠or Comparative literature?
But these may be as competitive as English since itās such a big college.
Barring that, English/Education in the college of education, but only if he has experience teaching/coaching/volunteering with kids.
Congrats! You are already out of the black box.
Thanks! PSU BArch was my D24ās first college application, as an in-state student, and she applied two weeks ahead of the Nov 1st EA deadline. She is still in the dark as to PSU. They didnāt require portfolio, interview, or any sort of essay. Iām curious how they evaluate applicants, beyond using transcript/GPA/test scores/ECs, and how they make admittance decisions.
Thank you for this! Are there any other majors youād consider less competitive, I know you have few suggestions. What isCLA?
My D24 was rejected for BArch program out right, not even deferred. Given her strong stats (private school challenging course load, GPA got a hit due to family situation during COVID but resiliently rebounded to 3.9 UW, 1550 SAT, great leaderships/ECs, āAā student at the nationās top intro to architecture pre-college program), this is surely a big surprise for us. She is asking for reconsideration for B.Arch. with her Resume, COVID explanation (not submitted to PSU before), and offer to submit a comprehensive architecture and art portfolio if they want it. But would they reconsider their decision (without program or campus change)? Is she an over-qualified applicant for PSU? Please advise, TIA!
Did you ask for summer? This increases your odds for reconsideration for UP. Iām not sure how it works with outright denials.
She has amazing odds, Iām sorry this happened. I am learning that admissions is a crazy process with no rationale behind it.
She didnāt ask for summer or another campus because B.Arch. doesnāt start in summer and is only at UP.
CLA= College of Liberal Arts.
But English isnāt considered a competitive major at all and heād checked summer so they really think heās going to sink at UP if they didnāt offer him that option. How good is it to start at UP and have to quit after a semester in a very competitive environment? Or do you think they made a mistake?
Agriculture would be less competitive but a would-be English major is unlikely to be interested.
Beside foreign language (which totally depends on his having 4 years of FL or, preferably, AP as most majors would have that prior to starting : itās less competitive because if 4years is very common AP isnāt) in CLA, for which continuing French Studies or starting some new, uncommon languages would mean UP, he could also apply for Media studies (Bellisario college of communication). The least competitive option for a UP admission AFAIK is English/Education: Secondary instruction/English or Middle Grades Instruction/English but he needs experience volunteering with children (to be highlighted in his personal statement).

Iām so so sorry to hear about your daughterās situation - her profile sounds very comparable to my daughters (3.9 UW, great leadership/ECs, and demonstrated interest in architecture). This is our first (and thankfully only) time going through this process and I have no idea how much of a crap shoot it is or how the evaluations work. At the advice of her college counselor, who emphasized how competitive BArch programs were nationwide, our daughter took AP Calc and Physics and applied to a lot of schools. Her Penn State personal statement was very specific about why she wanted to study architecture. Iām guessing your daughter did same so I donāt know why there would be a different outcome.
FWIW, I think it is well worth asking for a reconsideration if Penn State is her top choice. Iām so sorry this happened to your daughter and keeping my fingers crossed!!
I always say, it canāt hurt to ask. Unfortunately, it didnāt work for my my daughter but everyone is different so why not try. Plus, your daughter has amazing stats!!
She got Altoona instead of UP for nursing. She asked for reconsideration (even asked if she could send in midyear grades). Also asked if she could move to ādeferred statusā for UP Nursing instead of accepted at Altoona. They said without change to major they cannot reconsider. She wasnāt willing to change her major as nursing school is her dream but didnāt want to do it at Altoona. No 2+2 or summer start for nursing so she has moved on from PSU:( It wasnāt meant to be.
