Penn State Early Action for Fall 2024 Admissions

Sorry, I missed this last week. Her portal changed on Tuesday night (11/28). She noticed around 7pm that the test optional section was gone. The next morning (11/29) she checked around 8am and there was a message to “check back later”. She checked again a little after 9am and the acceptance was there.

Thanks! Will do. My daughter would do the same if offered Altoona for nursing. Where did your daughter wind up attending for nursing? Does she like her current nursing program?

She attends Temple for nursing. She was also accepted to several others but in the end she was choosing between Delaware, West Chester, and Temple. She wanted a city school and she absolutely loves it.

“I think they are overwhelmed with applications this year. It sounds like it’s one of those crazy years. I’m hearing this for a lot of the colleges unfortunately.”

I had to smile when I saw this response. Every single year, for the last ten years, there is some declaration from the masses that Penn State has had “record applications this year” and every year, the Common Data Set does not show this. It just FEELS like it because the wait for so many is so brutal!

Hang in there…decisions are weeks away at most!

That’s what I have been saying! LOL. My D24 applied ED at a different school so if she gets in there, we are basically buying out the gift shop for Christmas.
Then going on a ramen only diet.

For what it’s worth, Penn State Altoona’s nursing program is very well regarded. Penn State has 4 year nursing BSN programs at University Park (includes Hershey Medical Center campus), Altoona, Behrend (Erie), Fayette, Mont Alto, Schuylkill, and Scranton. The NCLEX pass rate for Penn State Nursing is 87.1% in the most recent year captured (although this is lower than the previous 5 years so it may be a feature of COVID messing with clinical sites because many schools had their NCLEX rates drop in recent years). This pass rate includes data from all of the campuses as they are all ‘PENN STATE NURSING’.

If you are interested in NCLEX pass rates - which is really the ONLY thing that should matter for a nursing program, you can look here to see the pass rates of all of the nursing programs in PA.

For what it’s worth - I am still of the belief that you choose the cheapest school that has the best overall average NCLEX pass rates because your student won’t get one penny more for attending an expensive 4 year BSN program over getting their ADN and doing the BSN online or attending a diploma or associates program first.

For example, many of the state schools in PA have higher NCLEX pass rates than Penn State, Pitt, or Temple and are significantly cheaper. And some of the HIGHEST NCLEX pass rates are found at diploma programs that are affiliated with hospitals. I myself got my original nursing degree at a diploma program and I had more clinical hours than the local universities and we had higher pass rates then also. I then did my BSN online and I can tell you, I didn’t make one cent less starting out than a Penn State grad. The NCLEX is your certification for your license, and diploma, associate and bachelor-prepared nurses all take the exact same NCLEX and receive the exact same nursing license. It’s something I don’t think people understand about nursing. The only reason to need a BSN in nursing is if your ambitions will lead you to continue your education. Your everyday floor nurses - even in the most critical units in the hospitals - often have an associate’s or diploma with an RN license and a lot less debt. Just food for thought!

Hi ! Noticed my son’s portal verbiage changed today . Signs of something brewing shortly ?

What changed….test optional section?

No, something about it now being under review .
All docs have been in and confirmed since mid October .

Mine changed like that too… wasn’t much of a difference, but something about the verbiage changed?

Either way, I wish I would just get an answer… that way, if my son doesn’t get accepted into Engineering, I could have them reevaluate for DUS and I would add his SAT scores (the sooner the better for that).

Can you write the exact wording?

My son’s did that weeks back. Check Lion’s Path - we did that when that message appeared and the acceptance was sitting there.

LionPATH Support – (psu.edu)

This has been the wording of my son’s since September
“Your application is currently under review. We have received everything required to complete your application. Once a decision is made, it will be posted here.”

Hi … is lions path different than the portal?

My d’s test optional button went away. She is now in her Lion’s Path, which allowed her in, but where would we look to see admission decision??

It would be under Communications - if she was able to get in, there is a decision in there. Look to the right.

Yes
