This is the official thread for those applying EA to Penn State University.

List your unweighted GPA, any SAT /ACT scores, and ECs. What majors are you going into?
Ask your questions, the CC community is here to help!

hange to TO will i still be considered for early action?

every school sends a school profile to the school. This shows what classes they offer and other information. My sons school profile actually shows te average ACT/SAT score and gpa of the class.

Our S24 created a LionPath account as soon as he was Admitted. You do NOT have to accept admittance and pay the fee to get a LionPath Account.

Are they sending acceptance throughout the day or just once a day?

It’s always been 2/3 GPA+Rigor, 1/3 everything else (scores, ECs, essay…)
Pitt is different, with test scores weighted much more. As a result, different strengths can still lead to a state flagship.
(Even though psu and pitt ae state related, they de facto function as flagships).

I would call the admissions office and ask since we’re getting closer to the decisions deadline.

@j9yank No one really knows, but they have an amazing amount of data (assuming they use it) … as @jlhpsu stated we have seen people with 4.0’s get sent to a commonwealth campus and be stunned. Later came out that it was not a rigorous HS and the student didn’t take Honors classes (that were offered at that HS). Conversely, there are always a few “lower” gpa’s that get in and people get angry “so-and-so got in with a lower GPA” and when drilled down, that student came from an extremely rigorous HS that wasn’t known for grade inflation.

Unfortunately, covid and classes have all suffered a shift and I am hearing (anecdotally) that grade inflation is happening now more than 5 years ago. That is why standardized testing was put into play years ago - to try and equalize the playing field, not realizing that students with more resources could study for the test. Nothing is easy.

(I am also hearing that rumor that Penn State may go to requiring standardized testing again next year. Will be interesting with a new Admissions Director if that happens or not).

I wonder if he doesn’t like test option now and that’s why there are so few TO acceptances being announced

If you look at the numbers on PSU’s Common Data set, only 38 percent of the students who end up enrolling submitted SAT scores. Seven percent submitted ACT. I bet some of those are the same people. It’d be interesting to see how acceptance rates break down across those who submitted versus those who didn’t.

By the way, my friend was accepted to the Harrisburg campus over the weekend and she applied later than me, and I have not received a decision yet. This also shows how the process is truly random. Just 13 more days to go!

Did she want that campus

I think she had UP as her first choice, and then Harrisburg. She’s looking into the 2+2 program though!

I don’ t know if it is that they “don’t like” TO, but rather that there is less data to work with. Maybe the ones that are TO need a second set of eyes - or a deeper dive into HS - or they want to ensure they know where “the line” is.

As much as we hear that PSU doesn’t read essays, if you are on the bubble, I would ensure it is submitted. People look for tie-breakers…

if it were my kid, I would have the essay submitted. Never know when tie-breakers are needed.

Yes he did the essay. All 600 words plus the 10 for the honors college after they sent him an email suggesting he fill out the application for it based on his academic records.

I’ve heard a few on other boards report lionpath access…not us.

One particular person applied “summer only”. Not summer option.
