There are many large schools that use more than just grades and test scores for admission. In the Big Ten alone, Michigan, Illinois, and Maryland are all very clear about holistic admissions.
Penn State Fall 2024 DECISION THREAD - DECISIONS ONLY - #57 by interested420 There are a fair number of OOS.
Thanks⦠I posted the wrong site!
Did you get an acceptance letter last night?
So if you donāt get in direct admit nursing as a freahman, you can take health sciences and compete for entrance junior year? i was unaware of this. I thought its one shot as a freshman and if you donāt get in your out of luckā¦?
NO NOT AT UNI PARK, only at the Commonwealth Campuses.
We did NOT!
And most of those schools do not promise to have decisions before January 1st. My two other kids applied to those schools over the last few years and did not hear back before February 1st. And that was for Early Action consideration. I think Penn State is doing the best they can (take it or leave it) given the amount of interest as reflected by the volume of applications it receives.
I think you are 100% right.
First, in terms of complexity and cost, there is no way a 17-year-old should navigate this process on their own. If my kid was going to go buy a car, I wouldnāt say ⦠youāre almost an adult go figure it out. I would be right next to them walking them through the process. And thatās for a one time purchase of something they could sell if they changed their mind. And a purchase that would cost considerably less than college.
Second, kids with anxiety, ADHD, or a host of other issues are going to need some special help during this process. Leaving them on their own to manage this would be cruel. My D22 needed significant help to navigate the college application process. She is thriving independently in a highly selective college.
Handling the application independently is not a hurdle a kid has to clear in order to do well afterwards. Some kids can handle it on their own. And some probably enjoy the independence of doing so. But in my opinion, if you are a parent with expertise in this area (even if that expertise comes from reading, message boards and websites, and diving deep into the process through your own research) then you should share that expertise with your child when your child needs it most.
I was ātoldā by a reliable āsourceā that the Nursing Direct Admits UP have all been released. There is NO Regular Decision for Direct Admit Nursing. ED is your only shot.
My other son S22 received his Nursing Direct Admit on Dec 6 2021 as did all the just over āONLY 400ā accepted.
My S22 was also legacy (Mom) and MOST Important he was holding a FULL RIDE Naval ROTC Scholarship which Iām sure helped in Admission.
And Penn State is pretty clear that it isnāt holistic.
I have a child at Michigan. Itās a wonderful school, but even with a more holistic admission process the schoolās you name still arenāt ones that will give you a high touch experience.
Also, check out that Michigan thread after EA decisions are released next month. You will find many OOS parents there whose kids were deferred who doubt that their applications were even read for EA. Penn State is giving decisions 6 weeks earlier than Michigan does and not deferring. Itās apples and oranges.
Sorry I meant this for nittilion. She had stated that admission toke her son looks like he got in so I was hoping he did and that there was some connection with the whole psu pride posting.
BOTH my sons HAD ZERO ZILCH NADA to do with their application process, EXCEPT in formulating thoughts for essays. They were too deep in APās, ECs etc. but as āHigh Statsā kids our āprivate paid college consultantā told us for them essays donāt even get looked at.
Yeah this a reality we deal with.
This alot of work, not to be undertaken by a 17 year old with a full schedule. I have FULL portal and email access to all schools applied then Accepted too, I maintain all the spreadsheets, I coordinate the campus visits, air, hotel, campus appointments all done by me. Then I get their input and go on from there.
Hiā¦my daughter got her acceptance this morning; UP, New Jersey, Architecture.
Hiā¦my daughter got her acceptance this AM, BB.Arch.
I completely concur. Iāve helped all of my kids with their admission process and theyāve gone on to thrive as independent young adults in college. My S22 in particular needed a lot of help navigating as he was an arts applicant and that required lots of portfolios etc. That application process was crazy with all of the different requirements, layered onto his hectic senior year. Heās doing amazing now at an exceptionally selective school (NYU). I feel that itās my responsibility as a parent to help them navigate this process that could set the course for their entire life. Of course, itās up to them once they get to the school to work hard and succeed.
I am paying for this education so I most certainly going to be involved. Its a huge finacial responsibility to not be researched from me as well.
Second note about decisions. Let me say Penn State was a top choice for my DD but already having an answer has made it her #1 choice because shes had the time to fall in love with the school even more while other EA schools arent responding anytime soon and pushing decisions into January. So I am very greatful for the fast answer and even more greatful that the ādribs and drabsā approach gave her the chance to find out even sooner than waiting till xmas.
As a 17-year-old who goes to school from 7-3, works from 330-7, goes to the gym daily, and whatever else comes across my schedule, I did all my college apps alone. I think it really isnāt too bad if directions are read carefully, and youāre patient with yourself. I applied to PSU quite literally 1 minute after the application was available because I had prepared mine over the summer. The worst part of all of this has been simply waiting lol.
Congrats! What is her stats if you donāt mind sharing?
My S is waiting for BArch as well. Also OOS. I donāt think he checked the portal this morning since he was rushing to get to school on time.
