Yes, you are correct that film production has limited capacity, but is not direct entry. D24 had a private tour/interview at Bellisario this summer. She was told they keep an eye on the number of kids selecting film production at application.
Once there, you can get into the major with grades in pre-reqs or with portfolio. Basically, they take everyone with the grades, then the portfolio candidates compete for the remaining spots. Their goal is not to have weed out courses, so they keep an eye on interest level at application.
I havenât seen any film production majors get in on any of the boards, nor have I seen more than a couple to Bellisario in general. So who knows how many they are deferring.
I had told D24 that PSU was a target, so no guarantees, but I didnât see it as a reach. Weâll see how this plays out. If they ever look beyond her grades, theyâll see relevant coursework in both IB HL classes and electives. Scholastic Art Gold Key. Two summers in a film workshop taught by a film professor. Itâs not her first choice ⊠I guess it will give her life experience/more direct compassion for her classmates dealing college decisions.
Does anyone know how to decline an offer of admissions? My son was accepted to UP summer start before getting into his ED school. Neither one of us can find any way to decline. I had him send an email to admissions but he got an auto reply that it will take a few days to respond. With 12/24 looming, we would like this spot to open up to someone else as soon as possible
Iâve been reading through this forum for a couple weeks now and found lots of good info. My daughter applied end of October for DUS, and we havenât heard a peep. Her portal hasnât changed at all, and no emails from her alternate campus either. A couple of her classmates have received their acceptance already (one UP, one alternate campus). She would get quite upset at first when checking every night for lionpath access or TO button, but at this point this whole thing has become somewhat comical and we laugh every time she checks and everything still looks the same. PSU was kind of a wild card for her, applied to mostly see what would happen, but at this point she has been turned off by the whole process and is moving on to other colleges.
You donât. This is a huge school, they are not expecting anyone to tell them you are not attending. When they donât get your deposit by May 1 they will know. They donât have the personnel to field all those calls, just let it go.
Iâm not sure why, the school has done nothing wrong, they promised an EA decision by 12/24. We were pleasantly surprised to get a decision earlier but were not expecting it.
I agree, but she is a teenager so she is expecting a response right here right now! PSU was not her number one in the first place and having to wait while getting other acceptances is just naturally pushing her away from this school
Offering a different perspective to all those frustrated by the process.
At least PSU is making decisions even if slowly. We were disappointed to get 2:2 OOS and will be declining.
But I am glad we know. He was deferred at many other schools. They donât seem to be making real decisions. Just high stat kids. I have friends whose kids are well above the 50 percenttile and are still getting deferred. They will very likely get in but the wait is unfair when EA was marketed as great thing and you will get a decision before Xmas.
I understand that the schools need a margin of error by these states wonât change significantly in one year. So they can make more decisions. I think they ran out of time or werenât resourced.
Good morning NJdad -
Weâre OOS (CA) , TO, and a Smeal applicant that switched to DUSâŠ
I align with your cost benefit analysisâŠfor us , the 2+2 Smeal isnât an option due to not meeting the Calculus requirement⊠hence the DUS swap⊠UP is sonâs primary campus⊠picked Burks for secondary⊠now with more research I think Altoona, due to UP proximity / size would have been smarterâŠdo you think itâs too late to ask for a switch?..I will call Monday to speak to someone about it⊠they might have some intel and help me decideâŠall the best and thanks!
It doesnât hurt to request switching to Altoona from Berks. We were given that option for my first son well after the 12/24 deadline, and while it was appreciated, ultimately he selected another school. If they canât reconsider it, then you know the fallback will be Berks.
IF still interested in UP, you can call and ask for reconsideration for a new (less visible) major+summer.
Even if s.o on the phone told you not to bother, you can always ask.
But if youâre glad this application is done/dealt with, donât worry - for OOS applicants, thereâs almost always a better, cheaper instate option than 2+2.
(There are a few exceptions, like direct entry nursing at Altoona v. Secondary entry instate, but exceptions are few&far between.)
Right. 2:2 does not make sense for us. First, he wants the college experience. Second, for OOS, there are cheaper options at other state flagships, particularly in the south. He has been admitted to a few already.
By mainly declining because he wants the college experience. By junior year UP, friend groups established and he would not be able to rush.
I heard very few OOS chose 2:2. You need to be a very focused kid who wants the PSU degree.
are there any benefits to attending a campus other than the main one? would i be better off attending a school like syracuse university if thatâs what iâm offered?
Yes, Syracuse would be much better than 2+2 starting at a branch campus ending at UP UNLESS youâre instate ¶ AND psu has a lower net cost for your family.
Benefits of choosing a branch v.UP for an instate applicant also include taking classes for engineering, premed pre-reqs, or Smeal that are weedout at UP and arenât at Altoona/Behrend/Harrisburg.
Finally, software engineering is only offered at Behrend (which is basically a secondary COE).
PA kids admitted to Millersville, West Chester, and PSU Brandywine may think 2+2 is worth it since theyâll be commuting to Brandywine and West Chester but will âmove upâ when theyâre ready with their cohort of ~500 students if they attend a psu branch (?)
