Thanks, and good questions. His interest is more on the public policy side than the teaching side (at least for now). And he intends to stay in the US after college (again, at least for now). He also considered the straight public policy major which finishes at Capitol College in Harrisburg, but the UP location is a real draw for him after he visited last summer.
Education and Public Policy looks like a great small program which cuts across lots of disciplines (education policy, political science, history, economics). He is very excited.
If he currently lives in a country where the primary language isnāt English, he can probably pick up a minor (or create his own cluster of advanced foreign language classes) so they appear on his transcript. UP has a lot of languages available The Language Portal | School of Global Languages, Literatures, and Cultures
+Anything in the Big 10 courseshare for less commonly taught languages.
Is he applying to Schreyer? I think College of Education is under represented. He would need to write lots of essays that make the professors who read them think āI want that kid in my seminarā but itās one of the best Honors colleges in the country and the key factors are curriculum rigor&the essays. Although heās not a straight A student, the fact heās attending an international school and got 4s&5s on his AP tests (and is currently taking more) would indicate that his school doesnāt suffer from grade inflation.
@MYOS1634 what are your thoughts on this application? We are worried as she applied a while ago and is yet to hear, yet another student with a lot worse stats overall said she was accepted last week of October to UP campus. Should she withdraw her test score from consideration? If rejected or given 2 + 2, should she reapply with an arts major (she has some potential interest in criminology)? Or reapply to straight summer start, and does that mean she would start with the LEAP program or how does that work?
Until Dec 20 no need to stress out. Piles of applications are gone through randomly (well, not randomly but their system is unknown).
Do not change anything as at this point itād put you back into another pile and delay the decision further.
If sheās not admitted to UP/1st choice major, she can always ask for reconsideration for another major. What you can do is help her look through the various colleges to find majors of interest and think whether she finds UP+summer preferable to 2+2, or the reverse.
If she checks summer it means sheāll start with LEAP, yes (students love LEAP and itās very useful⦠but itās expensive.)
My sonās portal just changed. The main section now only shows āWe have received and are processing your application. Please check back tomorrow to view your application status and next steps.ā The Test Optional section on the left has disappeared. Is anyone else seeing this or know what this means?
