Penn State Early Action for Fall 2025 Admissions

I believe someone with borderline stats for fall start at UP in their chosen major, have greater likelihood of being deferred (especially when getting close to the 12/24 deadline) and then offered the expected outcome in Jan/Feb.
Someone with clearly lower stats has greater likelihood of being offered a 2+2 by 12/24 as opposed to being deferred.
If you read the FAQs of PSU EA decisions, in one of the question they explain the rational for deferrals, and that deferral wouldn’t necessarily hurt your chances if you have the stats, they just need more time.

I’m confused on reading that weighted GPA is what PSU looks at and he has a 4.03 weighted but his unweighted is what’s keeping him out. Is that weighted GPA considered low?

What is his unweighted? A 4.03 could be a 4.0 with minimal honors/AP classes or lots of honors and AP classes with more B’s than A’s. Weighting can be totally different depending on how HS do their weighting. Is it 1 point for honors? Or .5 for honors? Is it 1 point for AP or 2 points for AP? That is why you fill out the SRAR with the raw data, so admissions can “normalize” it.

The ranges that @MYOS1634 talked about are unweighted. Generally, anything below a 3.5 has a higher chance of getting the 2+2. Nursing, Smeal, and Engineering may have higher standards due to competitiveness.

(Edited to avoid confusion  apologies to all)
EA: everything received by Nov 1-> answer by Dec 24
Priority: everything in between Nov2 and Dec1-> answer in January (alongside reconsideration from Priority and deferred)
Everyone else= rolling, decisions based on what’s left.

Priority and deferred students can still ask for reconsideration but the further from February the less likely there’s space everywhere (especially competitive majors) compared to EA students but if on the bubble the competitive majors were out anyway.
Applications to most branch campuses remain open till May (or even July for the non residential ones)

I think you have the priority and EA flipped? EA is by 11/1.

Yes, sorry, will correct with ETA to avoid causing issues.

I was accepted last night for biomedical engineering at UP! Good luck to everyone still in the process - your answer will come!!

Stats? Still nothing for S25 BME from PSU UP who 1460SAT/4.9W/4.0UW/ IB diploma and class rank 1, class VP, two varsity sports, theater, volunteer awards, shadowing, summer work.

Been lurking here for a bit. Haven’t seen any BArch candidates discussed - anyone heard? Know its a small program so may just be a product of there’s not as many candidates, so of course less potential folks to discuss. Still waiting here.

Congratulations to everyone who was accepted! Such a great accomplishment.

S25 is feeling pretty disappointed this morning. He was accepted 2+2 Harrisburg for Mechanical Engineering.

Stats: UW GPA 3.8. 9 APs (scored 5s on all but 1 in which he scored a 4). APs were CALC AB, Calc BC, Chem, Comp Sci Principles, Comp Sci A, Psych, Lang, Music Theory, African American Studies. Also took physics at a highly ranked liberal arts college. All other classes were at honors level. SAT 1390. Strong ECs including working 20 hours a week.

He really wanted UP so he is feeling discouraged. It will take a little while for him to get over his disappointment. We won’t consider the 2+2 as he is accepted into both Pitt engineering and Clemson engineering. He has great options!

I haven’t even broached the subject of contacting admissions for reconsideration into a different major. Maybe in a few days he’ll be more open to it. Sigh….

Trust me he’ll get in - those stats are definitely better than mine!
I went test optional.
4.6 W, 3.9 UW
1 IB HL
8 APs
Lots of good extracurriculars - including rowing captain year round, president of non-profit for period products in our school district, camp counseling, ski instructing, and biological research with PSU labs.

Let me know if you have any more specific questions, I’m happy to answer! I’d expect your son to get an answer within the next day or so - my TO button disappeared last night around 7:00, and I could see the answer at midnight in LionPath. Until then, hang in there! I was so stressed yesterday seeing everyone else get in - but you just have to trust that your son’s stats will speak for themselves. (Which I’m sure they will!)

That’s crazy! I can’t believe he got a 2+2 with those amazing stats. Did you apply for summer session as well?

We are all a bit shocked. He did not apply for summer as he works and volunteers at a summer camp. It really will be fine - just hard to see him so disappointed  And I forgot to mention - we are in state.

I think your chances are far better with reconsideration of 2+2 than they are with deferral. According to the last available common data set, only around 3% of deferred kids ended up being accepted…

I’m sorry. That really is shocking. I don’t understand. It appears he has everything they are looking for :broken_heart:

No. The student will need to contact the school to discuss the situation and request a special circumstances review. Only the financial aid office can determine whether any of the information used to determine financial aid can be adjusted, and if so, how (using federal regulations and internal policies). This is definitely a special circumstance, but whether any possible adjustments would result in adequate aid for this student is something only the financial aid office can answer.

This is really surprising. It’s great that he has such good options, though. My instinct in situations like this has been to assume that the universe wants him to attend another school, for whatever reason. He will absolutely be fine (although I know that it doesn’t minimize how he feels today).

3.3 unweighted

That’s crazy! I’m so sorry he’s disappointed. I hope he’s happy about that admission to Clemson, though! Big accomplishment! Gorgeous campus, excellent for engineering, great school spirit and sports, great coop/intern opportunities, very friendly people, and much better weather.
