Penn State Early Action for Fall 2025 Admissions

This problem is real (and was real also, but to a lesser extent, for UP students) which is why they’ve changed the curriculum. The ETM courses have fortunately changed, too, making a pivot easier (but still less easy than other majors - this is due to ABET accreditation).
Although, officially, if you start Engineeering at a branch campus, you can start anywhere … there are better places than others - Behrend, obviously, because it’s very strong in STEM, but Harrisburg also.

English or History are good - law school requires a lot of reading/writing/analysis. History probably offers more types of reading (primary sources can really include lots of documents, including some that would be fiction - ie., what the fiction tells about the times, or to apply a theoretical tool to a text such as The Great Cat Massacre about 18th century humour…)
CLA has lots of interesting, innovative or flexible majors.

Being a Paterno Fellow Aspirant is a challenge she could undertake if her HS preparation was thorough and a definite help in learning the skills needed for Law School Admission. She would need to declare her interest in the challenge, get an A or B in 137-138 (English& Communication seminar), take one or two honors history seminars, and have a 3.4 by the end of Spring semester. Paterno Fellows get more academic opportunities and special funds for extracurricular expériences. There’s a Paterno Fellow LEAP pride in the Summer.

If he checked both Fall and Summer and got a decision for Summer, it means he was already evaluated for Fall but didn’t meet their guidelines but when evaluated for UP Summer he did.
So you can ask for reconsideration but only for another, less competitive major.
Post 2288 has a good summary. :grinning:

What does CLA LHR stand for? Was trying to find it in the list of majors but idk what it is. Thanks!

No, if you check Fall then Summer they evaluate you first for Fallz then for Summer.
If you only check summer they don’t evaluate for Fall so it’s much faster (only 1 evaluation+fewer other candidates).

So if you do reconsideration for summer only should you also or can you also change the major or just change one or the other?

If you hadn’t checked Summer before, you can try and keep the same major.
If you had checked both Fall and Summer and got 2+2, you need to change majors.
You can change majors AND check Summer (only) if you wish - the safest route.

When you change majors you should always ask for a less competitive major. The fact a major is less competitive doesn’t mean it’s easier: often, it’s simply tucked away in a college that’s less reviewed by applicants, or its title isn’t straightforward for a HS student (BioBehavioral Health or Infectious Disease are ideal for premeds. But HS students think “biology”…)
Because the major may be difficult even if it’s less requested, you need to make sure you have the academic profile that goes with the curriculum. Food Science is Biology& Chemistry applied to food, with a solid science curriculum, so students need As in HS science and math through precalculus. If you say you want to major in Russian you better have straight As in a foreign language through level 4/AP. The kid who gets into Food Science may not get into Russian, and the kid who gets into Russian may not get into Food Science.
So the best major to pivot to for reconsideration should be a major that flows logically from your HS course selection, level, and grades.

So he just went on to do the reconsideration and after the last drop-down box there’s no button to hit submit or anything like that. Has this happened to anyone else?! So weird. Could it be bc the school is closed now for break?

Edit: it says to check back the week of Jan 6 to request reconsideration?! Weird that they shut this down completely at this point, right? Seems unnecessary

That is my exact question. So many people said if you chose undecided & summer session UP was very likely. Our son got 2+2 and is pretty bummed.

Anyone else still waiting for decision?

Did you select the second choice campus?

Yes. Engineering OOS.

“Very likely” is not accurate to say in this context.
It increases your odds a bit.

supposedly they are open on Monday until 4:30pm ET. Maybe they’re just not taking any new requests until after break.

Yep!

It seems that way. Kinda annoying imo

It’s indeed very annoying. They could have at least let people log the requests, even if that meant not sending confirmations at this time. Could be a system limitation where it can’t handle unpredictable volumes without manual interventions, for all we know.

S25 is in At UP for Aerospace Engineering!! Just like everyone has said, his TO button disappeared right at 7 and we were able to find the letter on lionpath about 5 minutes later. He did NOT choose Summer option FYI.

Good luck to those still waiting.
