Congratulations  :tada:
Can you recap his stats (Uw and w GPA, total of AP/IB/DE/Honors, if he had precalculus/Calculus Honors/AP, Physics Honors/1/2/C
)? Thanks :+1:

Generally speaking, in order to help future or current applicants gauge whether PSU-UP is a match (or reach or likely
) can posters list relevant stats when they announce the decision?
:pray::blush:Thanks :blush::pray:

Really perplexing but I guess there are still a few days left before 12/24.

Yes, of course!

UW 3.6
W 3.9
7 APs through Senior year (all 4&5s)
rest mostly honors or DE
35 ACT
NM Commended
AP Scholar w Distinction
AP Calc AB Junior Year (4 on test)
DE Physics - Senior year

(He did have one C, 2nd semester sophomore year which made it very difficult to get his GPA over a 4.0.

Thank you :+1:

I’m just wondering where exactly he notifies admissions that he is requesting reconsideration? He showed me the portal and the option to accept but I see no boxes to check or anything to request a change in major, etc. what am I missing?!

My daughter’s Penn state account says application materials are being verified. Will update this message when review of supporting materials is complete. She was late submitting her SRAR
does this mean they will review her application later? I should have emailed the AO to check before break but I assumed they were done with it.

Just realized she submitted her SRAR after Nov 6
thinking she is now RD. Penn was a bit of a reach school anyways. She is bummed, but think other options will be better at this point as she will likely not be accepted RD. At least now we won’t stress about acceptance email.

My S25 may be seeing yours in the fall, as he’s UP Aero! He loved Penn State, just have some difficult decisions to make.

My son already applied DUS with willingness to do summer session and was assigned 2+2. If he appeals for reconsideration, what else should he change on his application?

A less competitive major in line with his academic strengths (and perhaps just Summer session to hear back earlier - if his GPA×rigor isn’t 3.5+×10+ Honors/DE/AP * his odds at getting Fall are low anyway.)

(*Unless from a rural high school where these aren’t offered)

Thank you!

He wasn’t even expecting fall
he was fully prepared to do summer (and was actually looking forward to it). His school doesn’t offer AP or Dual Enrollment.

Would a letter be worthwhile?

Appreciate your advice so much

What are his academic strengths?
Has he taken precalculusl/calculus? A foreign language through level 4 or AP? Bio/chem/physics?
Has he gone through the different colleges to see what they offer that may match his most advanced courses or grades?

A message won’t hurt, though how much he likes PSU won’t really matter, the message should be how his academic background makes him well-suited for x major. If his school doesn’t offer AP/IB classes he can write it (in case the school profile doesn’t specify) but then he should highlight how many honors classes he took (you may have to ask the GC whether he got a “very rigorous” curriculum rating; this being the holidays not sure if you’d get a reply on time). It’s unlikely to do anything but if your son is a “no stone left unturned” kid then go ahead, this way=no regrets, he did everything he could and he has to move on. And if he’s successful, he will know he did not leave anything to chance. But if it’s stressful to him, he can just wait till Jan 2 and go through the basic process from his portal.

To prepare emotionally: Mostly college prep/regular HS courses with a sub 3.65 GPA is unlikely to result in a UP offer because the student would need another environment in which to transition to college with the best odds of success. (To explain it to your son: 1st semester of college is kind of like taking 5 APs at once, “APs” which are accelerated compared to AP courses - no student would be expected to go from 6 college prep classes in 11th grade to 5 APs in 12th unless they had straight As in the 6 classes and even then the recommendation would likely be 2 APs 3 Honors
)

However all students need reaches - if you don’t get a rejection or two you didn’t really stretch

Idk. Penn state is a very good school but it also isn’t princeton Harvard Yale. I know plenty of kids there doing just fine who weren’t exactly academic super stars in high school. Maybe it’s major dependent.
