His was pushed to regular admission because College board was delayed in getting SA scores sent. We ended up just having his app pulled. $15 down the drain for the sat score send…thankfully it was a free app.
ugh. nothing is easy. the good news is that it sounds like he has a great option!
thanks for the update -
Thank you. He is extremely excited about Richmond…It is definitely a dream come true for him.
Any guesses as to when reconsideration decisions will start to be released?
My OOS son will only go to UP and does not want summer session. He got Harrisburg. He applied directly to Smeal without knowing how challenging it would be. He has a 3.8 weighted average, 31 superscore ACT with 34 math. He is a math kid. Only has one AP under his belt (Stats with 4 on exam) as he did not do the English and history APs. He has ADHD and had reading challenges early on. He has A’s in his 3 APs he doing this year. Has worked since he was a freshman, captain of his varsity soccer team with All-Scholastic honors, All-State team selection, and was the MVP of the team and league. Captain of his Ultimate Frisbee team and awards. Coached two Intramural basketball teams. I’m not clear how you ask for reconsideration. Is it a call, an email, how does that work? Any help would be appreciated.
There should be button in his portal but you can also call or email.
Does he have As in precalculus and/or calculus? Level 3 or 4 in a foreign language? Is his unweighted GPA in the 3.5-3.7 range? (High schools have such different ways of weighting that at some 3.8W could be 3.7Uw and at others 2.8uw. Everything is evened out the same, with rigor taken into account.)
The closest major to Smeal is Agribusiness at UP. Good professional outcomes, less competitive because not many people know about it. He can also ask for DUS but that’s more competitive so much more uncertain. If he has a solid STEM background, he can also look at the IST majors.

Mine does not have this message. I have the “ Your application is currently under review, we have everything needed. Your decision will be posted here…”
Same thing here
Is there any data that points to what percentage of University Park admitted students must do summer start? Based on what I can piece together it’s in the range of 15% to 20% of the incoming freshman class.
Our student will be doing summer start and, frankly, if I had to redo my time at PSU I’d be all over this option versus the 2+2.
Read somewhere the summer session is around 2500 students, so probably closer to 25%.
Does anyone know if we can upload senior year report cards to the portal if we applied for reconsideration for another major?
Thank you for the information. His recalculated unweighted is 3.58 and when this semester ends most likely will be 3.62ish. Three years of Spanish. AP Stats B+ and A+, Pre Cal B+ and A-. Currently As in AP Cal BC, AP Computer Sci Principles and AP Econ as a senior. What do you think about DUS? He looked at the ones you recommended but doesn’t feel they are for him unless he could start there and transfer in to Smeal. Is that an option? How about Econ in the liberal Arts college? Again, can you transfer into Smeal? And would it be worth waiting until the end of Jan when the semester is done to see his grades with these AP classes? Again - Thanks for the help.
I would recommend he get the request in as soon as possible. Admissions has stated that they do not look at mid-year grades, so while that could be a help, I wouldn’t count on it.
Please read up thread about DUS and Smeal.
tldr: he can get into Smeal as a DUS student.
To get into Smeal, you must be premajor DUS or premajor Smeal. He could start in LA (econ) and move to DUS after a semester. But must spend at least one semester DUS. And meet ETM requirements.
Did he put down summer session? With his gpa, it could be helpful to get college started on a strong foot.
PSU will not look at senior year grades. They cannot waiver from the evaluation procedure on an individual basis. With 96K applicant they would ever be able to complete their offer process. Some schools will ask kids to submit more information for further evaluation, schools like Auburn who deferred a bunch of kids have asked for Senior first semester grades however penn state does not follow this type of process for admittance. Remember you are asking for re-evaluation therefore you are subject to the same application standards as those who have been admitted.
for reconsideration is economics ba easier than communications?
Hi, happy New Year! Just sending this to you as you have been very helpful…
My daughter tried to send an appeal to her decision for a 2+2 and change her major from communications to English (based on your suggestion for that major) And she loves writing and literature! She had already said yes to a summer start when she applied back in August, so we added summer start again. However, after the second attempt to send through for an appeal based on instructions in the portal and on their website and also my daughter’s high school local Penn State admissions rep…the admission office sends back that she is requesting a “reconsideration” and needs to do it in her Mypennstate portal. So, she just did that today, because the appeal is just not being recognized and I do not want to waste more time. I am just confused as to why they list an appeal as an option in several places and even our Penn state admissions rep suggested it, but they seem to just want to put it through as a reconsideration.

Summer session will not work for him. Is it easy to transfer into DUS from LA as a path to Smeal? Also - he wants finance. I’m confused with what they are saying on the website about transferring into the finance major. To me, it looks the only way may be the 2+2?

Yes, the process is called “reconsideration”. Fingers crossed she gets into English/Writing
