Penn State Early Action for Fall 2025 Admissions

27 should be enough, especially if his strength (higher than 27) was in English and Reading.
I don’t know what to tell you, it does sound strange.

33 in reading …

Is English 30+?
Definitely highlight the 33.

This is an unrealted question but you might know the answer. My son is a fall 2025 admit for economics at UP. If he wanted to do a dual major or minor in data analystics in the IST school do you know what that path looks like? I would assume to minor in something would be easier to connect the dots to get started. Thanks

Anyone can declare a minor and students can take the pre reqs without declaring a minor.
Double majoring in Econ and Applied Data Science would likely require him to have some AP credits already. If a minor doesn’t exist, he could also create his own thematic “cluster” by taking a few courses from the major.
Finally, there’s an NSA certificate that can be added to the SRA/Cyber security/ETI major.

For the Econ BS, he would need to take:
1st semester: English 15/30H, Econ 104+Calculus (Math 110 or 140), 2 other courses
2nd semester: Econ 102+Stats 200, 3 other courses.
If he got a 4 or 5 on the relevant AP exam, that would waive Calculus, Stats, and potentially either or both Econ courses.
IST 110, IST 140, SRA 111, and IST 235 all seem potentially useful classes to take for an Econ major with a technical minor meeting other gen ed requirements. All 4 would be accessible to a 1st year student and would preview the various possibilities in IST.

Data science has almost no overlap with Econ though.

Do you know if there any gen ed classes at PSU for becoming excel certified? What I am getting at is that what skills does an economic major come out with to get an internship like excel certified or other computer skills that a finance major gets in most biz programs.

Do you think he should call them or isn’t it even worth it at this point?

Thank you for the reply. Will file for recon.

I’m afraid I have no idea wrt this specific certificate. This would be worth asking them directly.

However Smeal offers a certificate for non business majors as well as 2 specific certificates and several minors for Smeal majors.

Thanks again

what are possible majors to pair with data science if i wnat ti double major? what is the most feasible. for context i have a lot of college credit already and will be doing leap. thoughts? thanks

Depends what college credits you have :grinning:

in general what would be the easiest to pair

Probably statistical modelling with math but I’m not sure it’s allowed because you can’t double major in 2 subjects that are too similar. So, you’d want a 120-credit major with a lot of gen eds and electives (a BA has about 1/3 courses you’re free to pick for a minor or major) + Applied Data Science.

Or Applied Data Science + a minor.
But like most technical majors it’s got a specific progression (classes you must take one after the other in a required order) and requirements, so fewer courses you’re free to choose yourself.

my son received his reconsideration request decision for UP and still didn’t get it. This is one of his top choices and I was wondering what we still can do. Can we appeal this? and if so, how?

Im very sorry. :hugs: It must be disappointing but you know you left no stone unturned and did everything you could.

An appeal requires some sort of very significant reason that wasn’t previously brought up (abuse, cancer, bereavement… Explaining Jr grades, for instance) or an estimation something doesn’t compute (3 AP 5s in subjects relevant to the major, a 3.75 unweighted GPA, 1400 SAT, and 15 AP/honors/IB courses, but offered branch campus). Is that the case?

In most cases, you should see this as being denied from UP.:pensive:
Hopefully he’s got other choices he likes. If not, some state universities are still accepting applications: USouthern Maine, URI, College of Charleston… as well as most PASSHE and a few PA private universities (Chatham, in Pittsburgh, Susquehanna, Muhlenberg, Elizabethtown, St Joe’s, and even though they officially stopped Jan15, if you contact them I think Duquesne and Drexel had extended their deadline to Jan 27 to some who’d started their app on CApp so may be open to a late application).

thank you! thank goodness he has other choices!

My son has experienced the same. Reconsideration request denied so moving on to other options.

how long did it take to hear back about the reconsideration request if I can ask?
