Penn State Early Action for Fall 2025 Admissions

Thanks

Economics major

The Microeconomics or Macroeconomics prides mix a required Econ class for both Agribusiness and Smeal and English 15. Microeconomics is weedout during the year so it’s better to take it over the summer. However Agribusiness students can take Economic Principles of Agribusiness Decision Making instead, a smaller class that is NOT weedout so it’s not as crucial to take Microeconomics during the summer.
English 15 is designed for most students - but students who took AP Lang and/or had 2+ Honors English classes where they frequently had essay exams and wrote multiple page-length essays should take English 30H in the Fall (less busy work).
IST 110 is another required Agribusiness class offered during the summer and it’s paired with Speech& Communication (CAS100) another requirement.
Finally, unless he took AP Calculus and scored a 4 or 5 on AB, or 3+ on BC (then he can take the credits and be done or take the credits then add the 2-credit course Math 112 which is calculus for business&finance), if he took Honors Calculus or AP Calc and scored a 3, he can take the Calculus&Writing or Calculus& Communication prides.
Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Calculus, English 15 (or 30H) and CAS all count toward both Agribusiness and Smeal.

Then, the Microeconomics pride, definitely. In second place, depending on the Math situation (AP Calc AB with 4-5 or not) a Math class, either the Calculus prides or the Math prides (which prepare students to succeed in the Calculus class required for Economics).
Finally, if s/he’s thinking of being a Paterno Fellow Aspirant (where Micro, Macro, English, and Speech-Comm would be part of the Honors classes in the Fall) any pride that doesn’t include English or CAS.

Thanks
I figured as much but we don’t finish yours until mid April.

I suppose you could put a deposit down - but then you’d withdraw and lose the money so it depends whether you can afford to lose $$

True - but we already did that at VT to get in line for housing. :joy: luckily I can’t imagine the one they are interested in filling up!

It’s $230 +$100 for housing, non refundable :sob: You don’t have to wait till March 24, if you know you can allocate the money and if push comes to shove forget about it, it can be a worthwhile investment in that it unlocks the ability to choose Housing, LEAP

For Housing, look into the LLCs and on the form list them in order of preference.

LLCs

Imho, North and South residence areas are the best. Renovated East Halls are now comfortable -gone are the days when furniture was fixed to the floor or 1970s common showers :tada:- but you have to be careful because it’s all freshmen being away from home for the first time so it’s often not conducive to studying Pollock is well-located but hasn’t been renovated yet so should be cheaper relatively speaking - it’s barebones but many generations have survived.

(Unless he’s into partying every night -NOT recommended- I wouldn’t recommend a random East Hall -I would enquire about a building with a Quiet floor or look into LLCs. 4,000 freshmen thrown together make for a rowdy, imaginative bunch, especially the first few weeks. Freshmen realize at some point they need to buckle down but for those aiming for specific majors with 3+ GPA requirements it may be too late. And who wants the smell of vomit? There are famously parties Th-Sat about everywhere, but IMHO Quiet floors or LLCs are the way to go to have fun without being overwhelmed.
Paterno Fellow Aspirants and Schreyer students have a quiet/sound proof study room in South.)

Hi, so me and my friend got into penn state UP and both want to room together, i got into penn state for summer but he is going in the fall. Does anyone know if we can be together during the fall and i could have a random roomate during the summer?

Yes absolutely. During the Summer, you are part of a LEAP pride (you’re now a lion
cub
and it’s like a lion pride). In the Fall you join your chosen dorm.
So, housing in the Summer is separate from housing during the year.
Read above about residence halls, Living Learning Communities, housing contract, and LEAP. :grinning:

Log into your housing contract - you will see two contracts, one for summer and one for fall. Hit the fall contract and request your roommate.

Just sharing that the Philadelphia Inquirer just published a story about Penn State closing some of the Commonwealth Campuses.

"Just how many campuses is uncertain, but none will close before the end of the 2026-27 year, she said. That will allow students on the path to an associate’s to finish, and those going for a bachelor’s will be able to complete their first two years in time to transition to another campus.

The three Commonwealth campuses in the Philadelphia region ― Brandywine and Abington and the graduate education-focused campus at Great Valley ― will not be considered for closure. They are among the system’s largest. The others that also are among the largest and are safe from closure are: Altoona, Behrend, Berks, Harrisburg, and Lehigh Valley, Bendapudi said.

“These campuses comprise nearly 75% of total Commonwealth Campus enrollments and 67% of campus faculty and staff,” Bendapudi said.

The other 12 campuses ― Beaver, DuBois, Fayette, Greater Allegheny, Hazleton, Mont Alto, New Kensington, Schuylkill, Shenango, Scranton, Wilkes-Barre and York ― will be evaluated by a team of administrators appointed by Bendapudi. She expects to have a recommendation from the evaluation team no later than the end of this semester and expects to make a final decision before commencement, she said.

“We have exhausted reasonable alternatives to maintain the current number of campuses,” Bendapudi said. “We now must move forward with a structure that is sustainable, one that allows our strongest campuses — where we can provide our students with the best opportunities for success and engagement — to thrive, while we make difficult but necessary decisions about others.”
