Penn State Early Action for Fall 2025 Admissions

Where are you from? We live near the Abington campus, so if my son wanted to commute he would go there. We visited it for an open house, though, and it is very much a commuter campus. The only university housing is a shuttle bus ride, and the cafeteria is not open on weekends, which means you are not required to get a meal plan, but you have to be willing to make your own food. We were told the campus is pretty much shut down on weekends. My daughter goes to the Altoona campus for nursing. It is 4 hours from us, but more of a campus feel with on campus dorms and off campus student apartments and houses. It is 40-45 minutes to the main campus so she has had football season tickets and goes up for games and events. My son put Harrisburg campus as his second choice campus. It is closer to our house than Altoona and also has more of a campus feel than Abington. Many people like Behrend, also, but that is the opposite side of the state from us and further from University Park.

Was Altoona her first choice?

Thank you we are from NJ & he didn’t know what 2nd campus to put. Not sure if we should change it now or wait to see once a decision is made. Thank you for all your helpful information

My daughter chose Altoona for her 2nd choice since its the closest to UP. Its one of the few branch campuses that also has dorms. You are close enough to go to the football games and you can even use the meal plan at UP.

My son chose Altoona also.

Got my admission letter from PSU Smeal College of Business for Finance. Out of State. Are there any advantages to those who get accepted into Smeal directly compared to people who applied DUS and intend to join Smeal later. Also, am I considered a direct admit or will I have to apply to Smeal at a later date? Good luck to everyone!

No, she wanted University Park. She was pretty disappointed, but the smaller classes at Altoona are good and she has gotten involved on campus.

thank you!

What are your stats?

we also applied political science out of state and have heard nothing.

Curious if students can use AP credits and CC classes to meet this 3.5 GPA requirement.

There is no “direct admit”. If you are in Smeal, you are consider “premajor Smeal”. You will still have to meet the requirements to get in your major (search on posts above). Congrats!

here is the information I posted previously.

there is no “direct admit” to a business major like some other schools. Everyone is considered “pre-major” until the conditions are met.

Requirements to be “in” their major:

  1. required classes

=> four gen ed type classes (Econ, English, Stat, and Calc)
=> four “business entry” classes (Marketing, Management, Finance, Accounting)
  2. apply within credit window. Usually sophomore fall or spring.
  3. maintain required GPA. Anywhere from 3.2 to 3.5. Finance may actually be higher now - it used to be a 3.5.

Once those conditions are met, you are in the major. They don’t take the top 50% once those conditions are met, or only 200, or any additional criteria. Google “entrance to major Penn State” + major and you will see what we have explained.

What type of stats should I have to get into nursing up

I see, thanks for the information. Is there any benefit to bring a “pre-major” at Smeal then. Is there no difference from a DUS and a premajor at Smeal? Something like I have a higher chance to get into a Smeal major compared to a DUS, since I am a pre-major. I believe I also saw something about an advisor for people at Smeal Pre-major?

Getting nervous over here since we haven’t heard yet. Applied Smeal late October. OOS, 3.6 unweighted (school does not weight), 5 APs, 6 Honors. 1540 SAT. 2 Varsity sports (2 year captain of one), one business-related EC, one non-business EC (president for 2 years). Summer internship at mission-driven company between 11th and 12th grades. Hourly job summer before that. Checked summer box.

If he gets 2+2 he can ask for reconsideration for another major (+ summer) at UP and if he still gets 2+2 he can ask for one if the “real” campuses (Altoona, Harrisburg, Behrend). Abingdon is a “suitcase” campus: it has dorms, but students go hone on weekends. From Friday afternoon to Monday morning it’s dead. The other campuses are strictly commuter even if some have dorms for students who don’t go home during the week.

I wouldn’t worry. There are plenty of in state kids who applied earlier than end of October and have not heard anything
.I think everyone who met the EA deadline will get a decision by 12/24. Good luck !
