Penn State Essays

This year’s essays:
l.Please use this space to discuss your activities other than academic work during the last several years (for example: school organizations, jobs, athletics, the arts, community service, religious groups, or other individual interests).

2.Please tell us something about yourself, your experiences, or activities that you believe would reflect positively on your ability to succeed at Penn State. This is your opportunity to tell us something about yourself that is not already reflected in your application or academic records.

Is #1 looking for a resume and #2 looking to elaborate? A resume seems kind of lazy. On the other hand they do not ask for activities anywhere else on the application…

I did my resume, but to be honest my guidance counselors said not to worry too much about the essays because unless you’re on the bubble they probably won’t even be read. The decision is 2/3 GPA and 1/3 SATs.

When my D did the application last year, she posted up her resume for #1 and her common app essay for #2.

I agree with chells they are unlikely to place much emphasis on your essay. Admissions are pretty much numbers driven.

My son was likely on the bubble and I really think his essay is what got him in to UP. Compare your scores and GPA with the average acceptances and see how you rate. Good luck.
