hey everyone. i got a 2+2 decision for penn state in december. i have asked for reconsideration with summer twice since, but they said no. is it worth asking again? i’ve gotten two different people each time, and i’m not ready to give up. i think i would make a great addition to the campus, and that is reflected in my ec’s and essays, which they unfortunately don’t look at. should i give it one last go? or just let it go?

Did you follow the specific process outlined above (email with new major and summer session)?
Or did you just call and say “please reconsider me for summer session”?

Please provide the major you applied for, highest level of foreign language and math achieved, total number of AP/DE/IB/honors classes if you want an answer you can use.

i applied as communications. i am graduating with pre calc, AP spanish, 10 honors, and 3 ap.

and one dual enrollment

Communications in CLA (Ba) or Bellisario?
What’s your GPA?
In the meantime I’m looking for ideas.

sorry it was advertising and public relations in bellisario. my gpa is 3.5 w (which i understand is low) and a 1260 sat. that’s why i was bummed when they told me they wouldn’t read my essay in the original evaluation.

Yes, 3.5w is very low for UP. Your ECs may show what you’re able to do but the degree is a set of academic courses. If your lower grades were in math/science and you got As in English/Humanities&Social sciences with an equally unbalanced SAT (530 Math, 730 English
), you may have a shot since overall rigor is good and you have AP Spanish. However if you got Bs overall rather than c in Math/a in English it’s a harder pull
still, I tried to devise sth that leverages your strengths as mentioned^.
So, send an email asking for reconsideration, summer start +Spanish BS, Applied Spanish; the 1st semester is similar anyway.

-If you scored 680 or higher on the English portion of the SAT you would take English 30H which will be excellent evidence of your linguistic abilities when you need to switch majors (as long as you get a good grade of course). If you feel really strong in English and Humanities in general, declare yourself a Paterno Fellow Aspirant and take the Schreyer sequence which comes with experiential learning, small groups, and a field trip in the Spring (137-138H). There’s a Paterno LEAP Pride in the summer (as well as prides about media&society or media&individuals). If you scored 550-680 you’d be in English 15 during LEAP.
This what you’d need to take, combining summer+ 1st&2nd semester, to pivot to Bellisario after Fallor Spring semester

  • Spanish 100C (Spanish applied to communication)*
  • CAS 100B or 100C (focus on small group communication or analysis of message)**
  • CAS 101N ( for students considering a communication major, open to all majors)*
  • COM 160 **
  • Econ 102 ← priority choice for LEAP, mandatory for Bellisario and weedout during the year (**) unless you got a 5 on AP Micro Econ
  • English 30H or 137H*
  • a math or stats class (math&money, math&elections, elementary stats, etc); Bellisario wants Stats200 unless you got credit for AP stats
  • a social science class of your choice (sociology, psychology, African American studies, anthropology, women’s studies
Bellisario will want to see a Psychology and a Sociology class.

*= must be taken during the Fall
** = must be taken by the end of freshman year

In your email, explain that you learned about Paterno Fellow Aspirants and you want to participate. In addition, you hope to join the Paterno Fellows LEAP and take Spanish 100C in the Fall. Therefore you hope they will reconsider your application for the Spanish BS: Applied Spanish degree at University Park.

In short, applying for the Applied Spanish major with summer session gives you the best shot at UP because you have AP Spanish and it makes sense wrt your goals (communication+Spanish is sought-after professionally BTW). The other options are less likely to be as persuasive and with this, you have the best profile (communication-focused classes, honors classes through Paterno, and if you manage to take Econ102 in the summer you avoid a dreaded weedout class that trips many students who want Bellisario).

thank you!

would i be able to switch back to my intended major at some point?
